Yeah I actually picked up a phase 45 myself recently. Really digging it though I am experiencing some amount of volume loss. Will have to try putting it in different areas of the chain to see if I can make it a little louder. Bass player is a beast, so I'm turned up pretty high most of the time.

I find with the phase45 after about 3 o'clock you can nail this type of tone. And as you said, the rotary itself is a bit over the top. The phase 45 at a lower setting gives just a really nice shimmer to your playing that is subtle but really nice. Great choice!

Well, shit. They canceled my order. I’m guessing it either sold in person and hadn’t been pulled from the site yet or somebody determined it was way underpriced and pulled it. I’m going to express my annoyance to them as another option I was considering for similar money is now gone.

How bad is tone suck with the unmodded stock version when off?
When off I don't have a huge issue with it to be honest. It actually works pretty much fine. Just when I engage it it's definitely a noticeable volume drop. I think I can probably move it somewhere after drive pedals and it might work better. I just haven't gotten that far into exploring it quite yet.

Ok, the volume drop is a bit of a bummer for me. After further research I just pulled the trigger on a Maxon PT999. It’s 4 stage, so a little less subtle, but in all the demos I checked out it was one of my favorites.

From what I understand there are internal trimmers for depth and center frequency, so I should be able to dial back the depth if needed and still have a live performance -friendly single knob interface.

I'm sure it'll get the job done here. I think as far as the pseudo-rotary aspect you'll probably find without an issue as you turn it up - most phasers can do a nice job of that and I'm sure this is no exception. The difference might be in the more subtle aspect. The Phase 45 is kind of uniquely subtle in a certain way that I'm not sure is easy to find in other phasers. But definitely worth a shot and I'm sure you'll find a way to make it work. Nice buy!

So, my Maxon order was a sham (see Musictoyz.com thread in ebay hall of shame).

Finally got word PayPal is refunding my money today, so I bought a B-Stock Tranquilizer straight from J Rockett.

From the demos I’ve checked out it’s more transparent and less “chewy” than a vintage style Phase 45, which to me is a positive. I also really like the vibe sound and could see myself using that almost as much.

The Tranquilizer arrived today and so far I really dig it.

As mentioned above, not as “chewy” as the classic MXR 45 sound clean, but that to me is a plus.

I really like the Focus control (bias) being on a pot. Just by tweaking this I can switch between a more pronounced Leslie-type thing and a subtle warble.

Combined with the amp’s tremolo things get pretty spacey.

The vibrato side is cool too, and switching is very quiet.

I've always wanted a rotary pedal (Dry Bell Vibe Machine especially), but I do the sound with a phaser (EQD Grand Orbiter) into a tremolo (either an EQD Hummingbird or a Caroline Parabola), and usually into a short delay. I'm sure an actual vibe pedal would be a lot of fun, but I really like the sound being 2 pedals. Plus, you can tweak your settings of each separate piece of that to no end.

Thanks. Everyone's input was really helpful. I'm glad I went this route vs. a rotary speaker emulation type thing.

I just got a Nux ROCTary and it's pretty decent for a Leslie emulator on the cheap. I don't love the octave modes on it (it kinda sounds like a hokey organ) but the leslie ramping + fast/slow button are nice. It is kind of an ugly pedal though! :D
