I'm not familiar with the Arcades..I just look a 5 min look and it appears to be DSP driven.
Am I right at assuming the little cartirdges just have firmware on them and no actual signal processing is taking place on-cartridge?
f so, it does seem like a burdensome way of doing things

I mean, at that point you're doing it purely for the sake of novelty, surely.HazBen wrote: ↑Thu Dec 17, 2020 3:41 pmI'm not familiar with the Arcades..I just look a 5 min look and it appears to be DSP driven.

It's almost as if effects pedals are modular enough that needing special modules designed around a single proprietary device/interface aren't viable.

This idea makes little sense in 2020 really.
If you're going to do cartridges that do analog circuits you'd basically have to make the "main unit" do something like input buffer and output buffer and a fixed set of controls.
Then the "cartridge" is the whole effect. It would very likely compromise the circuits to make them all use the same controls/switches/buffer/whatever, or make the catridges so complicated that they might cost too much.
You can make "cartridges" work really easily with digital effects. They're just software on a chip that you plug in. That solves 99% of the problems around buffers, the control layout on the pedal, etc..
But that's super kludgey/ridiculous in 2020.. cause you could just throw a USB port on the pedal or a bluetooth interface, or whatever, and then let people load the effects on that way.
Or you could just throw enough memory/storage in the unit to have all the effects onboard right from the beginning (they don't take much space) and just charge everyone up front for the whole thing.
There are lots of successful digital multi-effect pedals or pedals that can be tweaked via USB/Bluetooth/whatever and very few console cartridge style ones for good reason.
Even Game consoles have mostly given up on cartridges... Nintendo switch still uses them but they haven't been old school "cartridges" in a long time, they're just a read only memory card.
It just doesn't solve anything that a Boss Multi-Effect or a TC Tone print or a Source Audio pedal don't already do better. If you're the right age (I am) there is a nostalgia thing and that's it.

Yeah I mean even Eventide are dumping the modular aspect of the H9 (can no longer buy single algorithms post March 2021, only making H9 MAX)

If tc electronics opened up their PLETHORA X5 TonePrint Multi-FX Pedalboard to other developers, that would be interesting.
I can’t see it ever happening though.
TC delays, Strymon modulations, Meris bitcrushers, and Eventide or Lexicon reverbs, and then side chain inputs for analog devices like wah, fuzz or overdrive.
That would be cool.

Already there. You have interface pedals (like Teisco) you have a laptop, thats what already exists.fuzzjunkie wrote: ↑Sat Dec 19, 2020 11:11 amIf tc electronics opened up their PLETHORA X5 TonePrint Multi-FX Pedalboard to other developers, that would be interesting.

Re: Was there ever any resolution to the Devi Console thing?
This cracked me up.
These days, you have incredibly powerful digital multi-effects, and you have more options than ever for individual analog and digital pedals, including an entire industry of mini-pedals. I feel like people are already deciding whether they want the convenience and savings of self-containing ecosystems or the greater degree of choices provided by individual pedals.
In 2020, the entire concept of the console is the worst of both worlds; high cost per effect and fewer total effects vs existing multi-fx units but far worse selection of options compared to individual pedals. It's like building a telecaster with no pickups...neither the electric guitar nor acoustic guitar folks should want it despite it being a new in-between option on paper.

Thats a great idea. A guitar with no pickup selectors or volume controls.
Just plugin pickup module "strat-80% volume" to get there.
