I've had a few rats in my time but the one that's still with me is the big box reissue. Not sure why but it just sits right me.

I’ve had a whiteface ri (shoulda kept that), a woodcutter lm308, an early 90’s non-lm one (still got), a VFE Alpha Dog (tech broke it) and a Magnetic Effects Lonely Robot (currently use). They’re all similar and can be dialled in pretty much identical, But the alpha dog and Nono-lm one have been my favs as they’re more aggressive. The lonely robot is great on bass though (even though it’s on my guitar board atm due to size constraints)

I have a 1991 big box reissue and it’s all I would ever want from a Rat.

Mine is probably my favorite sonically. It’s a little sweeter sounding lower in the gain range than my original small box.

I have never owned a Rat, but I know both Sonic Youth and Jason Pierce used them. I’ve been looking for something that can take me from light overdrive into pretty heavy territory, and the Rat seems to fit the bill. I just bought a Joyo Splinter, which is based on a “fat rat” (not that I even know what that means), has gotten pretty good reviews, and only cost me $32 shipped. If I’m converted to a Rat man, maybe I’ll get the real deal at some point, but this seemed like a good option for dipping my toes in the Rat waters.

I just picked up one of those Joyo Splinters as well and it's a killer version of a Rat. One of these days I should get an actual Rat pedal to compare all my clones too, lol.

j.robbins jcm800 is the sound on many records! in addition to being the amp on the jawbox recordings he produced/recorded records for Texas is the reason, the promise ring, jets to Brazil, to name a few. im sure a few of them used it, I know when I recorded at magpie with J I used it for my guitar tracks!
:-* :-* :-*

Got any links to what you recorded there?

I bought a Rat 2 new about a year ago, and have really enjoyed Jazzmaster > Rat > Delay/Reverb > AC15C1. Really sounds great at low/mid gain for a lot of the sorts of sounds I enjoy (Shoegazey stuff generally).

(I just switch the Rat off and move to my Mooer Yellow Comp (Diamond Compressor clone) when I am playing with cleaner tones. And use a Muff without the Rat occasionally for violin-like lead tones.)

Recently, I've been recording. I'm really a rank amateur and must admit I don't really enjoy production per se, so have never mastered getting good sounds out of the amp sims in Logic. They always sound a bit rubbish to me.

Well, this week, I went Jazzmaster > Rat > Audio interface > basic amp sim with a cleanish tone. And lo and behold, it sounds pretty great. Suddenly it all sounds much more amp-like. Anyone else use their Rat for recording in this way?

Interestingly, it also sounds *completely* different (and much 'better') than the Logic Pedalboard's own software Rat clone, "Grit".

Totally. I use GarageBand, but JM -> Rat -> black/silver face amp sim is a great sound. Real natural and easy to record and track.

Enjoy!
