Great combo recommendations here. I think I need a RAT and DMM.
These have been staples over here at OSG for decades :D try and get a big box DMM if you can find one at a sensible price. Early 90s Rats tend to be favoured but, in all honesty, they mostly sound the same to most people.
Silly Rabbit, don't you know scooped mids are for kids?

What makes the big box DMM better? It looks like the smaller version is more readily available used.

Johnny can chime in with his own opinion but i'd say 'made less like shit'.

Lol. I didn't realize EHX had quality issues (this is genuine, not snarky).

EHX has never really made robust gear. Innovative? yes. Built well? nah. But the stuff made prior to the modern EHX stuff (pre 2000s) is better than the modern era stuff.

Ah, got it, thanks. I've only been playing electric and getting into pedals for a few years.

Well, if your ears aren't madly tuned into the finer details of different delay types then the benefits of spending hundreds and hundreds on a 90s DMM might well not be necessary. EHX pedals have never been particularly 'heavy duty', despite them looking big and solid...the cases are thin and the switches were often not very good and needed swapping out. If you're not too rough with your gear it's not really an issue...my early 90s one still has it's original one and it's fine.

As for the sound, the big-box ones have a very particular mix of analogue grit and 'warmth' but without the usual analogue delay darkness to the tone. It's a bright and clear sound with a wonderful organic feel to the echos. It's a very 'hi-fi' sounding analogue delay and, thanks to the chips they use being long discontinued, not easily replicated. The chips in the 90s ones were Japanese Panasonic MN3005's I believe that may be being reproduced in China now but I've never really looked into it. I know the originals are hard to find as NOS and are likely pretty expensive - and there's likely lots of fakes out there.

Either way, TLDR: The old ones sound, IMHO, the best, but a lot of people just don't care enough and no one in a crowded venue would even be able to tell. Try a modern one and see what you think. Or a Maxon AD900 / AD999 (possibly my 2nd favourite analogue delay). FWIW, the Memory Boy pedal is nothing close to the sound of a DMM so avoid those.

The DMM nano can get you 95% of the way there, although you’ll probably need to watch some videos of comparisons with the big box to see how to dial it in. It’s missing some warmth & sweetness, however it’s also a fraction of the size & runs on 9v.

A great alternative if you want a simple analogue delay sans modulation is the Dunlop Echoplex. Beautiful, bright repeats. I love it.
I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?

I don't disagree, that's why I mentioned about not being tuned-in to the smaller nuances of them yet. As you know I have a very minimal setup at home so I can afford to concentrate on having the best of what I like. I'd happily gig (and have done) with a lowly DD-3 if I ever wanted to have more than one pedal on my live board again :D
