Minimal Overdrive Advice?

Post by dffny » Mon May 13, 2024 6:07 pm

I’ve got an OCD that I love but want a pedal that will just barely push my guitar out of “clean”. OCD starts on 3 or 4 and I want 1–like I’m just starting to push the amp too far. And affordable. Any recommendations?

Thanks

Yes.

I also like the Emerson EM-Drive for this job.

You need the Dolamo overdrive, it's a Timmy clone, nice quality ... and only $20 on eBay. I love mine.

Timmy or Timmy clone. There's a reason we're all saying it.

My favorites for low-gain sounds are both the EQD Westwood and EQD Special Cranker. Both are outstanding and while they have a pretty good gain range, sound phenomenal at low-gain settings.

Another vote for Timmy.

A clean boost like MXR Micro Amp works if you want simple with no eq options. I love this one for looks & up to 30db: Echoline signal driver

I picked up a JHS Preamp Overdrive for cheap - that’s a lovely warm boost. Totally not transparent like the Timmy, but really gentle amount of gain so lots of options.
I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?

Excellent--guess I'll investigate Timmy first and then compare.

Thanks all!

A few years ago my buddy had the same problem....a desire for an OCD-ish thing with drastically less gain. I made him one and he loves it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DevYbyXFD48&t=11s

I've never owned or had the opportunity to play a Timmy, which I regret because it's right up my alley. However, I have and can recommend the DOD Looking Glass, which is a very smooth and glassy-sounding "transparent" style overdrive. I don't know what they go for these days, but I got mine very cheaply on ebay several years ago.
