basic audio fuzz! 6T9

Post by del » Wed Jun 28, 2023 1:03 pm

I recently started playing this fantastic ripper fuzz, the Basic Audio 6T9. It's in the vein of a fuzzrite or fz-1s or maybe a superfuzz, some sort of older 60s fuzz that's a bit velcro-y and all about dirty bikers and dusty horse-riders and motor city madness. It has lots of ways to adjust tone and fuzziness, with that three-way gain switch being a real powerhouse to shift this from a screen door to a solid wall of fuzz.

I was super eager to see what made it work, so I took a look at its guts. Who'd have guessed: its based on a TARANTULA!

It is both a new circuit (in that it isn't directly a copy of anything as far as I know and in was first released by Basic Audio this spring) and a newly acquired pedal by me.

If you're interested, you can find Basic Audio's website here: https://www.basicaudio.net/
It lists most, but not all (i.e. the 6T9 is not yet listed), of the Basic Audio pedals.

And the Basic Audio instragram page is frequently updated with new designs and audio clips (including the 6T9): https://www.instagram.com/basicaudiowv/?hl=en

I’d say I drool mostly over Basic Audio & Blue Colander builds these days. ZeroGIoD as well.

Does the 6t9 cop the octave sound as well?

I follow Basic Audio and their pedals are some very impressive work in style and sound. When the 6T9 showed up on their instragram, and then the sound clips, I sent them an email about it and ultimately bought one.

It's a blast of a fuzz pedal! It can achieve a nice octave-y clang if you want it to, but I'm not sure that it's producing a real octave. I'd guess that if you sent an email, you'd get a response about it.

Very cool. I have 3 Basic Audio pedals and if I were more of a collector I would have 3-4 more. I really like his take on the Superfuzz. Judging from the sound clips this fuzz doesn’t sound like anything I have from him. Lots of good tones.

It sounds pretty distinct to me, too. I have lots of fuzz pedals and it's definitely of that 60s/70s splatty style, but not precisely like any of them.

Notably, the lowest setting on the gain switch can make it sound like a cheap-o vintage transistor amp when it is just lightly breaking up ... and that's a sound I really love and haven't reproducde with anything else I have. That setting also works GREAT with bass and lets lot of an instrument's bassy-ness pass through while still being fuzzy.
