I’ve been on a Shadows kick and started wondering what tape echoes Hank Marvin used.

i don't know, but thanks for the peek into those 6-head disc/drum delays - i'm amazed at the lengths
that the European designers went to create sophisticated and effective designs, so early in the game.
i have a '62 Klemt Echolette, an old Vox multi-head unit, an early Echoplex, Space Echoes, and i've played a couple of dirty old Echorecs. but those Meazzi's look like the mothership!

I didn’t know he used all those different units. I thought he used a Binson Echorec and an WEM Copicat.marqueemoon wrote: ↑Wed May 03, 2023 8:02 pmApparently all of them.
Has anyone credibly modeled those early Meazzi and Vox units?
Apparently it was less about which device and more about sound quality and reliability? Most of those have a sweet spot around 240 and 360ms, so something around there should work.
Of course there is the Catalinbread Echorec simulator that does a good job. I think it does 6 playback heads? From the article it sounds like Marvin mostly used just one. It only does the drum echo sound.
Another option is the Strymon Volante which does the drum echo sound plus tape echo and spring reverb. It only has 4 playback heads though. If you only need one then that’s less of a concern and it covers more sonic territory.

I use a Mk2 Copicat and that by itself gets close - but add an Ibanez AD100, a TC HoF reverb and a Strymon Flint, and you're there. All day.

Thoughts on the Catalinbread Adineko for copping this sound? It’s an oil can delay emulator, but you can blend between long and short repeats.
In my limited experience it can get weirder than the CB Echorec, and I kind of like the smeary/chorusey thing more than the galloping thing.

I love his sound so much. I always try to imitate it with my Ibanez DL5, but I never succeeded

From what I understand it’s a short delay into a longer delay.Twang Deluxe wrote: ↑Wed Jun 14, 2023 12:30 pmI love his sound so much. I always try to imitate it with my Ibanez DL5, but I never succeeded
He’s also a heavy user of the vibrato arm, so some of the modulation comes from the tape warble and some comes from the dry notes and the repeats being slightly different pitches thanks to the vibrato use.
In short playing technique is a big part of the sound.

Hank Marvin is one of the best.
A big part of getting his sound is to use the bridge pickup (mostly), but pick the strings up near the neck. It sounds trivial, but hardly anyone does that - most people tend to pick near the bridge when using bridge pickup.
Regarding the earlier comment about the Adineko, I find it’s a great pedal to capture the Marvin vibe. I realise it is the ‘wrong’ style of delay, but the high end roll-off works great when using a strat bridge pickup.

Guys like Charlie Watkins, Leo Fender, Harold Rhodes et al were very schooled up on electronics post-WW2. Those brains had to go somewhere!i'm amazed at the lengths

He's the reason I gave a Strat copy the side-eye as a 12 year old. Still here!Marvin is one of the best.
