Looking through my Flickr searching for something, I found a pic of my old gigging rig. I would swap around the BJFe with a few others but the HBOD was pretty constant. The amp also traded up duties with a tweed Deluxe I built from a Marsh kit.

I love the look of that amp, looks so 60’s. What is it? I also really love the finish of your tele, I’m not generally a huge fan of tele’s but that looks really nice.

The amp is a Silvertone 1484 of unknown vintage and a closed back, pine cab from ebay loaded with 2x12 Weber Sig12a speakers with some lovely paisley cloth from JoAnn Fabrics for a grill cloth. The tele is a pine body found on ebay that I coated in layer upon layer of shellac and sanded for hours in between coats. Paired together, they were dark, warm and that tremolo was just addictive. The reverb was terrible and great but only in the trashiest way possible. Amp was the perfect volume, you could open it up just about anywhere and it would stay clean enough and loud enough to play nice with a full band.

Funny thing, I've yet to see any 1484 with the black paint coming down as far as it did on that one. Don't know if it was an early run or a late run or just a production goof.

That’s awesome. How would you say the silvertone sounds, other than just clean? I love that really old 60’s look to it, unlike the usual/obvious amps you see. A few years ago I heard of vampower amps, still yet to really hear one but they look super cool.

You’ve done a great job with that tele, it looks gorgeous.

Why, thank you!

Silvertones have kinda their own feel and eq balance to them, they're probably closer to tweed Fenders and early Ampegs than anything BF. Maybe brownface Fenders at the cleanest. They are looser feeling and not sharp and bright with a big, round midrange. They sound like they're struggling a lot as they get driven as they kinda famously have underpowered output transformers and power stages. Because of that, they don't have a really solid and stout low end either.

Silvertones are not well built, they have pressboard cabs and are true point-to-point wired inside in a glorious rats nest. But they used good quality electronics, tubes and speakers in them. Pretty much, they are everything purists and snobs will tell you won't work well but they are glorious and unique! With a nasty fuzz like a fuzzRITE or Bosstone, they're pure 60's garage rock.

No pedals. :wtf:

Volume and bass full, treble at 1 o'clock. Bone rattling. Warm, thick, chunky drive. Stays clean to halfway then saturates.

I couldn't make this my "one sound". Too dry, doesn't take effects at high volume. But I could see myself being in a band where that was my one tone. It's SUCH a good gnarly, thick, mean sound.

It’s a great guitar. It’s only a 2021 Chinese Worn model, but I’ve replaced all the hardware and tuners with Faber (inc bridge posts which made a massive difference), added the ‘58 Bigbsy B6 that’s been in my spare parts drawer for a decade, and buffed the matt finish to a vintage-esque satin which revealed the grain filler giving it a two-tone look.

Love it, but the R7 still wins!

We've got our first show since COVID next week. Sort of a big event and we're headlining a Friday. My Bassman Ten is freshly serviced, so I'm telling my back to shut up and deal. I want a tower of Fenders.

I never thought I'd need louder clean headroom than the Bassman Ten. Just, like, 15-20% more power. I guess "need" is relative. But we're a loud band, reverb and feedback and fuzz. I guess a Bassman 100 is all that's left for me to step up to.

Dropped a pair of fuzzes from the board. Leaner. Louder.

Itchy. Tasty.

Keeping it pretty lean today.

'76 Greco Spacey Sounds (70's Tele Thinline clone) -> Tiny Garage Pedals HP-1 Clone -> Mixer -> Garageband.

Getting some pretty rad Sparklehorse-style direct-in fuzz tones with this setup!
