I normally gravitate towards Celestions too!
Same here. I have a Gold and a G12H55hz in my 2x12".
I have a pair of Golds in my horizontal Bassman 2x12 and a quad of Scumback m75 in my 1960a :) The Golds pair of phenomenally well with the bf Bassman! The 1960a is paired up with my Valvestorm jtm45 and it's a match made in heaven, those speakers are just the natural voice of that amp.
I'm not surprised. I use the 2x12 with my Tremolux head and I agree. Though I tend to prefer the 1x10 for recording (mostly I suppose because I can drive it a lot harder), in practice or live situations the 2x12 really is phenomenal. It sounds especially great with a good klon clone as a pre-amp/boost after the other pedals. The only way I could see of improving it would be to replace the G12H for another Gold to get a pair like yours. But I've been holding off on that because the golds are pricey and because it's already sounding great; I know it can be even a little better, but then maybe great is good enough? That's often been my struggle lately; I'll be perfectly happy with something, but the knowledge that some mod or tweak to it could make it a little better still just won't give me a rest.

Back when I used to play for churches, I would run the pair in stereo with a Fulltone ST2 and pan them hard R and L in the house. Just a lovely little motion to it.
I bet that sounds lovely! At the practice room, I sometimes run my Guyatone (a 1x12 70s transistor amp) in stereo with the Tremolux. It's interesting playing through both a solid state and a tube amp, because their attack and pick response are noticeably different. It works surprisingly well together. No idea if I'd prefer it to two tube amps, because I haven't had the opportunity, but it's worth experimenting with if you can.

I have a little ss Ampeg practive amp from the 70's that sounds really good, I'll have to try that in stereo with one of the Champs! Might sound better in dual mono though.

Sorting out the live sound. New head with a nice drive means no need for the BE-OD

Nice solid no-nonsense rig right there. Blackstar gets a lot of unwarranted hate most places of the internet but I don't agree with it. They're just souped-up Marshall's, and they're super affordable. Fellow forumite GaryPtaszek has been blasting one for years and it sounds great on record and live. They're not much for traditional (read: 60s/70s) levels of gain but if you're into more modern stuff (read: 80s and later) then they're great.

Plus, I'm always happy to see a Rat on a board.

I bought the Blackstar on my constant journey to find an amp I can carry on the tube. It’s light, albeit bulky for a lunchbox type head. More than enough power. And with the ISF, I can dial in a better sound better than my old DSL50. The digital reverb is surprisingly good, too.

Yeah, the crunch sounds are meh. This amp will play toilet venues & small clubs. Doesn’t bother me. Plus head & cab cost a total of £200.

Jesus, that's amazing. How does the staple P90 sound? Is the sound any different to a regular P90 or is that just guitar forum myth?

Hey thanks, it took a loooooong time to get it, but it was worth the wait. :-*

The "staple" Alnico pickup is a very different construction to a P90. It is more hi-fi sounding and really strong...mine is all the way down.
With fuzz it is an incredibly thick but not muddy sound. The P90 though, is my favourite pickup of all time. Raunchier in a very musical way...turn the volume down and it gets sparkly. What a sound. :?

Close second is a flatpole early 50s Tele type pickup. 8)

But yes, back to the Les Paul...if I could only ever just have one guitar, this would be it.

So jealous over here :D What I've always wondered about vintage stuff like this is do you play it live it or would you be too concerned about theft or damage? I know you've that 60's Jazzmaster that's seen a lot of live use but I was wondering if you treat the Gibson differently? How do you get insurance for something like that?

Sure, I'd play it live if it was a gig round London...I wouldn't travel with it, though.. if I were to play out of town I'd probably play something else...probably my '13 SG Standard or something.

...the problem for me with playing the '56 out of town is not really the price of the guitar...it's had headstock break and I bought it a long time ago when they were actually a lot cheaper. It's more that it is irreplaceable to me. And by that, I mean the particular guitar...maybe a different '56 wouldn't be as great...it's always hard to say with guitars. Some are great, some are so-and-so.

But honestly, a great guitar is a great guitar, and it never matters really how much you spend.

I paid just over £800 for my run-of-the-mill Gibson Explorer and it absolutely destroys. Rings like a bell, it's insane. I like it better than almost all my other more expensive humbucker guitars, (bar one)...and all my humbucker guitars are very good. Some guitars just have "it", I guess. Hard to say what "it" is...but thankfully it has little to do with price or age of a guitar.

Thank god for that! :D
