Amplifier Building Parts and Suppliers

Post by mcconnachiea » Mon Jul 27, 2009 5:28 pm

Righto, so we have a thing in the offset section on where to get parts to build guitars...... why not have one for amps? I need one because I'll be building one if the price works out

so we need chassiss, tubes, caps, resistors, speakers, wires, transformers etc....

Post the links and I'll edit them in..... LETS GET CRACKING!!

Antique Electronics Supply- ( www.tubesandmore.com ).  Pretty good selection, they sell can multi-section caps and a lot of stuff for good prices.
Hoffman Amps-- ( www.hoffmanamps.com ).  Really good service and lightning-quick shipping especially on the eastern seaboard.  I am NYC metro and get my stuff in 2 days from clicking 'order' pretty much without fail.
Mojo Musical Supply-- ( www.mojomusicalsupply.com ).  A little high in price, but maybe the best selection
Ted Weber-- ( www.tedweber.com ) great speakers but also sells other amp parts and amp kits.  Also sells can-style multisection caps.  Some of his discrete parts are from asian suppliers and are kinda cheap, but most of his stuff is pretty good.  Speakers, cabinets, and chassis are all outstanding.  Also, they offer discounted Mercury and Heyboer transformers, which is a total bonus.
Vibroworld-- ( www.vibroworld.com ) Has been closed now since the day before forever.  They keep saying they will "reopen soon" but they never do.  But if they ever do, I used to get stuff from them for my Magnatone amp, and they also sell can-style multisection caps and some decent cabinets, etc
KCA NOS tubes-- ( www.kcanostubes.com ) good place for NOS tubes.  Not the lowest of the low prices, but the best service I've found.
Tube Depot-- ( www.tubedepot.com ) Some of the most common parts and tubes, pretty good prices most of the time.
Mouser-- ( www.mouser.com ) General electronics parts.  You can generally find something you can use here, but often it's not 'vintage appropriate.'  For some stuff though, like resistors, diodes, etc., it can be a good source especially if you need bulk and quick shipping.
Small Bear Electronics-- ( www.smallbearelec.com ) More centered around pedals and pedal building supplies, but sometimes they have good prices on stuff that will apply for amps or general use.  Most of the resistors, etc. are 1/4 w though which are not recommended for most amp applications.
Tube Amp Doctor-- ( www.tubeampdoctor.com ) They're in Germany. Their parts are probably a tad more expensive than they are with the American suppliers, but lower shipping costs may compensate that, if you're in the UK or europe.
Ceriatone-- ( www.ceriatone.com ) Some cool complete amp kits of marshall clones and more
Mathercab-- ( www.mathercab.com )  Some really well constructed cabs.

Tube Amp Doctor

They're in Germany. Their parts are probably a tad more expensive than they are with the American suppliers, but lower shipping costs may compensate that, given how you're in the UK.

I edited the title to correspond to the same post in the pedals section.  Now it's your job to continue taking care of it.  :)

http://www.mathercab.com/  Some really well constructed cabs. This is where I got my blue champ clone cab and the build quality is pretty outstanding.

A while ago I discovered this web shop in NL; they service the jukebox market, but of course there's a lot of overlap with guitar amps. At least their JJ tubes (€ 61 for a matched quad of 6l6GCs) and Jensen speakers (e.g., the C15K 8/100W... € 102 vs. € 132 at TAD) are a lot cheaper than most other places in Europe, I've noticed. Maybe useful for others?

http://www.mojotone.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Great website, and the staff is very helpful. I restored an old beat up touring Mesa last year and bought almost everything from them.
