THE MIGHTY MIGHTY BASSMEN: Fender Bassman (and clones) Owners Thread

Post by stevejamsecono » Tue Oct 21, 2008 6:41 am

Well, it was suggested, so I'll start it. Here's my best friend. 1978ish Fender Bassman 70 w/matching 2x15 Cabinet.
Image
As it appeared to me originally in the shop (the Strat is not mine).
The shop is called Empire Guitars down in Providence RI, it's a little corner of a pawnshop with a really cool (albiet usually kind of expensive) collection of old honeys.
I played the amp on a complete whim, and fell in love immediately with it's basic kind of "no frills" sound. The 15" speakers pretty much seem to like anything (it even was a passable bass amp for awhile, god forbid!), and I can't wait to pair it with a Bass VI or a Baritone Guitar.
Great platform for building effects on, maybe the best. Haven't tried jumpering the channels yet, may some day.

Who's next?!

Well I've only posted my amp 5000 times.
I had a blackface Bassman a few years ago and had to sell it because of hard times. I loved it, it was loud and mean.
I went to this little shop in Knoxville called the music room (probably one of the best shops for vintage stuff in the area) to see what he had.
He had two silverface bassman. I picked up a avri jazzmaster ($800 in perfect shape) and plugged it into a marshall 4x12.
I was in love all over again. I ended up buying the Bassman 70 because it was cheaper and it sounded better. I got it for $300.

Oh and I have jumped channels on it, it sounds cool like that but gets a tad too bassy and harsh for my cleans.
I did record some bass on my bands demo using it with the channels jumped with a big muff!
Someone said these weren't that good for bass amps, I say you are crazy. I played a show with my blackface and nearly killed people with my loud lead guitar bass playing, and the 70 totally has more umph to it.

I got this amp last week on CL. The guy was selling it with a 2x10 cab for 600. I told him i had a 2x12 cab already so he said 450. I talked him down to 425 and  that was that! As stated in my original thread about it I was playing it through said cab. It sounds good but I wanted to try it through my 4x12 ampeg cab. Hooked it up and  :o holy shit did it sound great! Deep, warm clean tones(playing it with my MIJ jag). Im taking it to practice tonight. I dont really want to lug around the 4x12 because its fucking heavy. So i want to save up for an Avatar cab with some nice speakers. At any rate here is a picture of the beast  :)

Does the Sovtek MIG50 count? No bass input, normal and bright channels, shared tone controls with mid and presence?

If a JTM45 is allowed then count me in too.

It's really very similar to a Bassman circuit after all, Jim Marshall basically copied the Bassman of the day, but used locally available components.

Mine came from Ceriatone in Malaysia, so it's a clone of a clone.

Actually I had a 1965 blackface before, I guess I wouldn't have had much of a problem with the lack of a mid control because I use a graphic eq anyways, but I didn't want to deal with running it off a transformer in Europe.

I've got a SF Bassman 135 (?- or maybe it's a 100) and two of those huge 4x12 (with internally angled speakers).

I've had it for ages, but it's been in storage for more than ten years now.... (that's why I can't check what exactly it is)  :(

My plan (hopes) are that I will take it out of storage next year, as I'm about to build a music/rehearsal room in my basement. I've searched my files, but I'm not able to find any good pics of it at the moment - I'll post some if I find any.
Someone knows where I can find the nearest woodchipper to throw my pieces of junk into?

I used to have this one. A '64 AB863. Turned out to be a rather desired one, so I sold it for twice the amouth I paid for it.
But It sure sounded good. I just had to have a Showman.
