Anyways, I've never really cranked a JCM800, I always thought (in my head) that they were too high gain, but I could be wrong.
My old RedBear was supposed to be pretty close to an 800 and I was kinda amazed at how little gain it had vs what I expected. May very well have been my amp but I read a fiar number of reviews talking about how the RedBear was gainier than the 800's.

not too high gain, same as a 70s JMP MV. I would always add a bit of gain to them but just a hair. There's a 10k resistor on V1a. If you change it to 4.7k it adds a bit more dirt.

I always found the JMP master volume had the perfect Marshall tone for me, just needed a ts boost to get it at the right gain. This 800 gets there easily and at home I’m nearly off 1 on master volume :D

Thinking about getting a Two Notes Torpedo Captor x to give me some flexibility with pushing the valves & for recording demos.

I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?

I've been tempted by one of these for my Bassman and Twin, but never had the opportunity to try one out to see how I'd get on with it. More interested in the attenuation side tbh as I have a Strymon Iridium for recording quick demos/ideas etc.
