NAD 62 6G4-A Super Amp
Last year I sold my 63 Vibroverb RI and the homemade 6G3 Deluxe clone built from Tube Amp Doctor kit. Then the opportunity arose to buy a 6G4-A Super Amp from a nice older gentleman.
Here it is!
All original except for extension speaker jack, part of the tube chart is missing, NOS Tung Sol 5881s and NOS preamp tubes. Original transformers, including original triad export power transformer.
Sure, electrolytic caps (original ones were still in there) are new and some resisitors replaced that needed to be swaped out.
I had no experience with old/original 10K5 speakers until now, but this pair sounds really, really good. I'm hesitant to use these speakers at high volume because I've heard they only have 10-15 watts RMS each. Can anyone confirm this?
On the other hand, I have a nice pair of JBLs here that I would love to use with this amp.
This Super is not tube rectified, like all export Super Amps. This is a big plus for me as I prefer solid state rectifiers anyway.
Sounds so good.

What's the output on these? 35-40w? If so, those speakers probably sound amazing teetering on the edge of death. I love 2x10 amps (and 10" speakers in general) but never tried one of these.
Very nice and congratulations

If you're going to swap speakers, try some nice Weber's...something with a bit more low end fortitude. Big fan of Weber speakers here - I have one in my old VibroChamp and my Vibrolux Reverb had some old ones in too - both sound utterly amazing.

Agreed on the Webers. I have a '61 6G4-A and those Webers sound brilliant.

Re: NAD 62 6G4-A Super Amp
Thanks!
I just got back from the rehearsal room where I turned up the Super a bit. The speakers break down quite a bit, starting at setting 5-6 on the volume knob. Up to 4 on the volume control, everything sounds very good, like at home, where I have tested it so far.
First I'm going to try the pair of JBL K110s that I have here anyway.. After that, we'll see.
Thanks for the tip on Weber!

30 Watt probably, based on the output tubes used and the OT. And yes, the speakers are facing death. Death by volume.

As I recall you just converted your 62 Bandmaster into a 2x10 combo, which is pretty much Super Amp without a tube rectifier. You already have your dream amp.

My '61 Super 6G4-A still has its original Oxfords. I've punished them and they're still alive. The ones in my amp sound great when adding a bit of their own crunch

Re: NAD 62 6G4-A Super Amp
congrats!! I was after this amp for decades but they’re so expensive. any sound clips? I also vastly prefer solid state rectifiers (especially for surf music).
I built a 6G4 (non -A variant) Super last year with custom iron. It’s so good. thinking about doing an SS rectifier on it.
i think I like alnico 10s on the super. i haven’t matched speakers to mine yet. it also sounds good through a ceramic weber/warehouse combo of 10s.

Thanks! I'll make some sound clips with Oxfords and then with JBLs at some point next week.hexes wrote: ↑Thu Feb 23, 2023 11:24 amcongrats!! I was after this amp for decades but they’re so expensive. any sound clips? I also vastly prefer solid state rectifiers (especially for surf music).

Yes, tube rectifier gets in the way when it comes to fast passages like uptempo sixteenth notes.
Which Weber and WGS speakers did you use in your Super?
I have no experience with either brand, having used 15" JBLs almost exclusively for a long time (D130, D130F, and K130).

Re: NAD 62 6G4-A Super Amp
The Weber 10A125 is what I put in, they sound super nice and smooth. I must say the reissue Jensen P10Qs also sounded real nice. I have not heard vintage 10" Jensens, nor vintage JBL 10"s (tons of 12" and 15"). I do have a '62 Bandmaster cabinet that has original Oxford 10K5s (I think). I don't really love those! Kinda dry.
