New Dream Amp Day

Post by MayTheFuzzBeWithYou » Thu Jan 26, 2023 10:11 am

Edit: The Amp arrived, pics on page 3

I‘m on vacations right now and expected to maybe grab a pedal or a Squier or a cool used weirdo guitar… if something cool came along…
But what I did not expect is that I‘d run into an amp I love aesthetically and for practical reasons and would be buying it with no hesitation. That‘s a first for me.
But the paying-safe feature of ebay kleinanzeigen gave me confidence.

It should arrive in about a week (same as me) and I‘m really looking forward to play it!

So that‘s about the time you have to guess it! :)
No hints this time because last time it gave it away in no time…

That‘s actually a pretty cool looking amp that I haven‘t seen before (or can‘t remember) - but no, it‘s not that one! ;)

Where are you vacationing, and did you get to try said amp in person?

Judging by your other amps I'd guess a blonde blackface Showman.

Edit: ...but wait, a vintage amp is not exactly practical. It's newer and probably a combo. There are Vox amps in stunning colors but I don't think a "british" amp is your cup of tea.

Okay. I have no idea. Maybe a blonde (aesthetically pleasing) Tonemaster (practical) Deluxe Reverb (dream amp)?

On a volcanic island - and no, the amp is/was seen in Germany.

For some reason that reply gave me a really weird image of you (I don’t know what you look like) flipping between a winter storm in Helogland & blazing sunshine in the Canary Islands.

Volcanic Island is a powerful pair of words for sparking visceral fantasies.

Anyway, volcano… if that’s a clue I’d say Engl Powerball. Sounds like a chainsaw. But the dirtiest guitar tone has to be Steve Albini’s guitar tone in Shellac. And I don’t know what amps he uses.

Also don’t know how this nonsense reply has gotten so long. I want to know what amp it is!
I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?

Those are sadly nowhere near me (or near my budget) same as the Gomez Surfer and how else they‘re called.

Canary Island are correct. Ding Ding Ding. A hundred non related points to you! :)

Helgoland is not for me. LEGO-Land on the other hand would be one of my childhood dreams… maybe one day when I have children of my own.

And yes, indeed we escaped right on time - the last days in Austria were already freezing cold - and when we arrived on Lanzarote we received word that there was a lot of snow in Austria already. Here it‘s very windy - but when it‘s sunny - it‘s between 17 and 24 degrees (celsius).

It‘s my first encounter with volcanos and it‘s quite magical!

But no clue for amps… and ENGL amps are very far from pleasing my eye. Good amps for sure…but not for me.

Best guess so far! A (maybe lower wattage) Showman would be a dream amp indeed. Don‘t know about Deluxe Reverbs as I never really played one of these (except the 65 reissue head for about half an hour - which was (besides the Reverb and Trem) not any better than my Supersonic or Bandmaster so I passed when one was offered in Austria (it also changed owner 3 times within a few weeks - so probably something was off with it too - I recognized the non-stock handle so yes, it was the same amp - someone offered it only with a cab - next time 50€ off and no cab, from another seller….)

Combo Amps would be what normal people consider practical. But there is another type of amp that you don‘t need to worry too much about (meaning in a financial way) and therefore is „practical“ - also I‘m in Europe - so there is one thing that really bugs me about one of my other amps that this one already has - which I also consider very practical!
Sorry, my word‘s might be a bit deceiving…

Also it’s not British, you got that right too.
I had a Vox AC100H head from a friend for a few weeks that was awesome! … but also very heavy and buzzing in a nasty way - something with the mains plug - so I didn‘t buy in the end (I got the now sold Sunn Solarus back than instead)

If I recall, it's a black panel bassman with an Intersound IVP in front of it into a couple of PA speakers with tweeters.

The most deliberately obtuse sound he could feasibly get away with.

It's a bi-amp setup with an IVP with poweramp into one speaker and a Bassman into the other. Cabs are thiele style with guitar speakers in one and full-range 15 with horn in the other...
