Favourite Big Muffs and other fuzzes for Jazzmasters?
Hi all.
What fuzzes do you find work best for you with Jazzmasters? Particularly in a band context and heavy riffing! I already have a Big Muff Op Amp but looking for other options....
I have a Mesa Rectoverb 25 + matching 112 Slant cab (V30) and Friedman JJ JR which I can use with a matching vertical 2x12 (V30s) or Runt 112 (Creamback).
Thanks!

Analogman Sunface.
I have the BART version and I use no other fuzzes anymore.

Thanks for your feedback. What genres do you play? I'm mainly an alt-rock/grunge guy.johnnysomersett wrote: ↑Thu Oct 20, 2022 10:00 amAnalogman Sunface.

Basically the same really. It's everything I ever wanted out of a muff or fuzzface or similar. I still have an Ampeg Scrambler but that's an extremely niché sounddavidpggarrett wrote: ↑Thu Oct 20, 2022 11:52 amThanks for your feedback. What genres do you play? Never actually heard the Ampeh Scrambler in the flesh but it's certainly iconic-looking. I used to have a JHS Firefly Fuzz, which I sold for profit - not a fan of the JHS aesthetics. Replaced with a Park Fuzz Sound and Function (fx) Professional MKIII to try and get my Tone Bender fix, but so far haven't quite matched the Firefly!

The Ampeg Scrambler makes your guitar sound like glass being smashed and put through a blender. Its beautifully horrible.

What I play stylistically is pretty different, so take it with a grain of salt I guess, but I really like my Magnetic Effects White Atom. I have the 4 knob version.
I think it’s best at those middle ground sounds between distortion and fuzz where it’s a little spitty and gated, but overall reads like distortion. It’s VERY fun to push with a treble booster.
From my limited experience bringing it to practice it holds up in a band mix too.
I may actually give it some board time after our next show to give the Rat a break.

Re: Favourite Big Muffs and other fuzzes for Jazzmasters?
I've got lots of fun fuzzes for that stuff, I prefer the buzzy Fuzzrite type and horrifying bulldozers like a Fender Blender or Torn's Peaker for rotating stunt fuzz.
But my main board has a Rat, Superfuzz, and Green Russian Muff and I almost never truly *need* anything else, especially for big riffy alt/grungey stuff, and the Rat at low/medium gain with a little volume boost really kicks either of the other two in the butt.
Superfuzz Mode 1 is Mudhoney, Superfuzz Mode 2 is heeeeeaaaaavvvvy.

Re: Favourite Big Muffs and other fuzzes for Jazzmasters?
I always liked my Roland BeeBaa more than my OpAmp Muff. I don’t really use it for heavy riffing though. Like the Superfuzz it has 2 modes, but it’s not a Superfuzz. Mode one is JAMC and mode 2 is MBV. It also has a treble booster.
For heavy riffing I think of something more Tonebender Mk-II rather than a Mk-III like the Park Sound. Plenty of gain, but still cuts through. Heavier than a Fuzz Face type, but less gain than a Muff. For me less gain actually sounds heavier when the rest of the tone is right. I like the FuzzRite idea too.

I really like my Solidgold FX Imperial 2 fuzz. It sound great in a band setting. Very open sounding. But it's gated. Sometimes, the gate is nice, sometimes, it doesnt suit me. So, I also have a Ram's Head reissue for a more prectitable fuzz.
I use to play a long time with a FF clone and a Jazzmaster with great result.
The new Boss Waza fuzz is also great. I think it's based around the Tone Bender colaboration they did.
I also have a Fuzzrite, nothings beat it for a Fuzzy Surf Tone.

Thinking much the same. Really like the op-amp with my jag, but don't care much for it with my jmdavidpggarrett wrote: ↑Thu Oct 20, 2022 6:56 am

Spitty and gated is not a bad thing! Do you run it into a broken up amp?marqueemoon wrote: ↑Thu Oct 20, 2022 5:11 pmWhat I play stylistically is pretty different, so take it with a grain of salt I guess, but I really like my Magnetic Effects White Atom. I have the 4 knob version.

Sounds like some cool Mudhoney badness! I'll have to try a Superfuzz some time.MrShake wrote: ↑Thu Oct 20, 2022 9:01 pmI've got lots of fun fuzzes for that stuff, I prefer the buzzy Fuzzrite type and horrifying bulldozers like a Fender Blender or Torn's Peaker for rotating stunt fuzz.
