Jupiter speakers

Post by Sauerkraut » Thu Sep 08, 2022 12:43 am

Being in Europe, I can get WGS, Jupiter, Eminence and Jensen speakers at reasonable prices, but not Webers or Fat Jimmy's. So I don't have an expert opinion, but I love Jupiter speakers. I can't find much about them here, so here's a thread.

I put an 8SC in my Silvertone 1481. Sounds great. Put a single 10LC in a small, portable cab for my Tremolux head. Lovely, tight low end, clarity at the top end without being too piercing. I like it so much I swapped the G12H30 in my bigger, 2x12 cab for a 12LC, and it was an immediate improvement. I'm not good at describing sound, but it just seems a lot more present, clearer, less mid-heavy, with more defined bass. And it's not even broken in yet. In fairness, a Jensen-like speaker is probably just a better match for that amp, though it's paired with a Celestion Gold (which I'm very happy with).

Anyone else have experience with Jupiter speakers?

I'm a pretty bag fan of Jupiter, esp the 8sc :D. I have them in both of my Champs (tweed and SF). I had a pair of 12LC in a 2x12 Bassman cab but I didn't give them enough time to break in before I got rid of them. I didn't realize at the time how dramatic a difference it would make and I've also come to find that I don't like American style speakers with Bassman amps.

The Jupiter speakers and Fat Jimmy speakers are both made, to individual company specs, by WGS. All 3 share an excellent build quality of course.

I've had a bunch of Webers, some were great, some were really not. The best Webers I've played were their Sig12A "cheapo" speakers. I liked them dramatically more than their more expensive version of the same speaker.

Other than the Jupiters, I really stick to Golds and Greenbacks :)

Sister Hula is right on. I've got an 8SC in my Selmer Little Giant and it is kilometers better than the stock speaker it came with. I'm pretty sure the WGS is almost 95% of the same speaker as Jupiter, and more available. (I'm not even sure Jupiter sells speakers in the EU anymore-- at least Tube Town and TAD don't carry 'em anymore?)

I have a '63 Princeton, that had a Weber 10" speaker in there when I got it.
Saw a Jupiter 10" for sale some time after, and decided that I would give it a go, and I'm glad I did, the amp sounded much better, much more alive, the Weber was just too much, and needed more power, than the Princeton could deliver, where as the Jupiter had a smaller magnet, and was much more suited for a 12W amp.

Tube Town‘s where I got my 12LC the other day. They seem to still offer all models except the 12LA.

Oh, that's good news. I've got a Watkins Scout on the way that will probably need a new 10". :w00t:

I have that old Fender Super that lost its Jensen P10Qs, does Jupiter have any 10" -ers that kinda sound similar? Just curious.

They offer alnico 10”s, the 10LA, which should be quite similar to a P10Q. It’s supposedly based on the P10N. My bet would be that it sounds nicer than a new Jensen P10Q, not quite as good as an original. But I haven’t heard any of these speakers.

The 10LA should be about as similar as you're likely to get new. Just be sure to fully break them in before you really judge them, it is a dramatic change, they mellow out a lot!

Brilliant thanks to you both! This amp currently has a new P10Q and a new P10R, kinda weird but dang it sounds pretty dang good. Maybe the P10R is for earlier breakup? One or both sounds slightly blown so I wanna replace em.

I love the name Jupiter so I may just give those 10LAs a shot! Or do what I really want which is pay out the nose for vintage P10Qs.

To be honest, I find the Jupiter ceramics pretty good too. I wouldn't worry about putting in some of the 10sc either or maybe a mix of the 2. No matter which, you'll be pretty far on the safe side of wattage handling!

Wow what a concept! Now I have to get two of each just to see which ones I like more. I was utterly floored at hearing some vintage C12Qs on a Bassman, this was after only really hearing JBL D120Fs and Oxford 12M6s. Then I heard some P15Ns that also sound just brilliant. So I'm probably splitting hairs and would like both alcino and ceramic speakers. Thanks for the idea!

EDIT - holy SHIT those alcinos are super expensive!! I think I may just go vintage, and save money! Holy shit! $270 for a 50 watt 10"?!!! DAMN!

Edit #2 - okay the ceramics are more reasonable but still what I'd consider expensive for a new 10". But what do I know? (Nothing!)

For what it’s worth, I had a P10R (reissue) in my 1x10 cab, which I actually quite liked. I replaced it with a 10LC so it could handle my 35w amp and I ended up liking that more. At least to my ears, alnico isn’t always better.

Thanks for that. You know I think I may actually like ceramic better. I love the ceramic Jensens, they seem to drip a little more than the alcinos, and also are a little more mellow. But I've never heard 10"ers until these two new Jensens.

I'd try the smaller magnet ceramics then. They still handle 25 watts apiece.
