speaker recommendations for my traynor guitar mate reverb

Post by s_mcsleazy » Mon Jul 25, 2022 10:37 am

the time has come peeps. the old speaker in my traynor is on it's last legs and i'm looking for something to replace it with. my normal reaction of "just stick fanes in it" didn't sound great...... awww well *adds to the pile of fanes* so. what 12" speakers you all like?

I've got a late 70's YGM-3 with a Pyle Driver in it (came with it, I didn't put it in)

Sounds pretty good and neutral to me, I usually run it with the treble boost off, with the volume, bass and treble all at noon. Not insanely loud, but lush and full sounding, without a mid-spike that I've heard some complain about.

If I had to do it again I'd probably go with either a Cannabis Rex or a Red White and Blue, both are go-to's for me. Though I'd note that either of these would probably make the amp much much louder than it currently is.

i run my traynor the same (well a little less bass) i like the idea of the cannabis red but it's kinda out of my budget and i can't find any demos that aren't just blooze licks for 3 hours.

Am I right in remembering these are based on a Fender but with EL84s on the power end? If so, just slam an Eminence Delta in there. They sound great in that sort of voiced amp

I'd second the Rex or maybe a WGS Reaper... those sound great with my Bassman, so probably a good pairing with the Traynor.

EDIT: I see the budget comment now... hmmm...

Right, I got muddled up on speaker models. My suggestion would be an Eminence Legend 1258. It's what I have in my Marshall 2x12 that I use with my Bassman...great sounding speakers

in my ygm3, i have had

one of the smaller magnet ceramic jensens
emi cannabis rex
jensen jet 100

the neodymium jet 100 (sometimes called tornado i think?) sounds the best and is the lightest. i'd put two of the 10" equivalents in my vibrolux if i could justify the cost (also i'm very happy with the emi legends in there presently!)

i second this, especially on a budget... i very often buy my speakers 2nd hand locally ( and online, as long as they are returnable, and cheap enough given the shipping cost). every Eminence/Naylor/Reverend, and WGS 1250-type ceramic 12, has rung true... i'm going on 15+ years on some of these since buying them 'used'. they are workhorses that sound great. and most of my amps are in that wonderful 20-watt range like yours.

it's a Fendery, strong clean sound for sure.

if you were leaning just a bit more Voxy, i really like the Weber Alnico 12a125, but with the "British" style cone. i had him make me one in the 90's and i've played that speaker more than anything, often full throttle, been 25 years now - it's the one thing that lets me take a 6V6, 7591, or EL84 amp from Fender clean to Vox overdrive with minimal fuss. harder to find used, though.

cool amp, Sean!

Yes those Marsland speakers were not the best.

I have a Celestion Vintage model in mine but never taken the back off to see which one. It sounds good.

I’ve done a couple of mods both well documented on YT - the tone stack mod to make the amp less bright. Also the trem speed has been slowed down.
