Switching to amp modeling... Boss GT-1000 Core?
Hi all
Some years have passed, our old band is no more and so is the rehearsal space. The last few years I've only been picking up my accoustic guitar once in a while so my Jazzmaster stayed in the coffin. A few weeks back I started again pulling it out and playing it as quiet as possible through my Fender Champ. I live in an apartment with neighbors and I just can't turn the thing up enough to really play.
So my I thought to myself man, it's 2022, leave your damn romanticism behind (at least when it comes to amps) and start to accept there are amp modeling solutions of which some seemingly say they're even "better" than the real things (whatever "better" means).
I looked a bit around and came across the Boss GT-1000 Core which has a small footprint and seems to do all the stuff I need, amp simulation, effects, even has send/return for real pedals.
What are your thoughs on amp modeling in general and does anyone have experience with this particular device?
Thanks a lot!

Nothing wrong with amp modelling if you have the time/patience to work it all out.
I’ve done overdubs in the studio with a Kemper & couldn’t notice the difference.
If a Line 6 is good enough for Dustin Kensrue to record albums with, it’s good enough for everyone.
I’ve got a Boss MS-3, which probably has similar effects. Sounds great & does what I need without the amp modelling.

I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?

I believe Johnny Marr uses one, so I bet it doesn’t suck to say the least. Maybe try one out!
I’ll stick with my Kemper tho’.

When you're new to modeling devices they just seem to be equipped with so much "fancy" tones / patches - whereas I'm really just looking to get an authentic clean Fender amp sound (and maybe some little overdrive). Just hope it can do that

Different Strokes you know… But, if you like the Sound of Tube Amps it ain’t there….. At least not yet.. Close but no Cigar..
That said if it’s for rehearsing, noodling, late night in your Bedroom go for it..
Still, keep your Tube Amp for playing out..

Ended up buying the DSM Humbold Simplifier DLX. So far like it very much after accepting its not a tube amp

I don't have any experience with the Boss GT-1000 Core, but I've been recording with a Walrus ACS-1 because like you, I live in an apartment and can't get a good recording volume in my spare bedroom studio. As a practice amp, using headphones, have to admit that it's pretty disappointing. it sounds flat and lifeless- this is probably due to my headphones, a set of Tascam TH-200s, which are merely good enough, but not great. Recorded, however, going through an ART Preamp into a Zoom TAC-8 and Logic Pro X, it sounds wonderful. I can barely tell the difference between it and a tube amp- the differences are there, but you have to really lean in to hear it; it's really a matter of splitting hairs to discern it, it sounds that good.

If you’re recording & have an Apple Computer which usually comes with GarageBand, or if you Logic, for a couple hundred bucks you can get a Focusrite Interface that comes loaded with all kinds of Instrument Software.. Including every kind of Amp, Speaker & even Mics for Speaker Cabs..
Also, every Foot Pedal in existence.. You can build whatever Pedal board you can conjure…
It is mind blowing what you can do & how good it Sounds..

Even if I'm quite happy with the clean sounds I can get from the DSM Humboldt Simplifier DLX I just bought a used Two Tone Torpedo Captor (non X) for good price. Wondering how it will work with my 5W Fender Champ

If digital modeling bums you out, keep an eye out for Tech21 gear. There are lots of options and it's all super useful and absolutely viable for recording use. I've pretty much ditched software modelers in my DAW--I used to use the IK Multimedia Ampeg and Fender packages--in favor of VT Bass and Blonde pedals for my bass and guitar recording needs. Works great, both pedals are capable of a wide range of sound.

I’m a huge fan of the helix stuff. While I don’t have a floor unit anymore (gone back to amps/seperate fx), I do use the Helix Native plugin and love it.

Re: Switching to amp modeling... Boss GT-1000 Core?
Just as a quick update: The Two Tone Torpedo Captor (non X) works great as an attenuator over the actual Fender Champ speaker, so it lets me play at (almost ) bedroom volume, but when used as a cab sim into my audio interface it somehow breaks up much more early and doesn't sound that nice. Don't know why it breaks up earlier then. Could it be it's because the Fender Champ is 3.2ohm while the Captor is 4ohm ?
