There's a '61 Super (2x10) on Guitar Center's used amps section listed as "Fair" condition for about $2799. The "Fair" condition was concerning and since I couldn't check it out in person (it's in Nashville), I decided to go with the Pro since it's a great amp in its own right and convenient to check out in person.
I miss all those amps, but I miss the Super in particular. It was a transition model - not quite a 6G4, but not quite a 6G4A either. All the brown amps were very transitional, though. I had that one in the early ‘90s. It looked brand new. It must have spent most of its life in a closet. The Concert was also great. Those used to be complete bargains in the early ‘00s. I paid less than $1K for mine.

Sounds like you live in the DMV (love Atomic, but have not been there since Covid hit). Do you remember Southworth? That place was insane. $600 brown Deluxes, $400 brown Princetons. I remember at one point they had THREE blonde Twins at the same time…

Well I do. I even remember when it was over on MacArthur Blvd in DC (I went there when I was quite young and didn't know anything about gear. I'd drop by their Bethesda location as often as I could.

I'm not familiar with Southworth, unfortunately. I grew up in Montgomery County and frequented Victor Litz Music in Gaithersburg (took guitar lessons there as a kid) - they're a family business and it's still going strong. I remember Venneman Music in Rockville. I've only been to Chuck Levin's in Wheaton a handful of time over the years. What years was Southworth in business? I was out on the west coast for some years (in US Navy @ Pearl Harbor, Hawaii then San Diego from '90 - '94 and then San Francisco working in Silicon Valley as a Tech Writer from '96 - '06).

What a lovely, lovely amp! The only brownface I've ever played was a Concert that I tried so hard to purchase from it's elder owner but he used it for harp and didn't like the 4x10 tweed Bassman RI's that were available at that time so he kept it.

At least the early ‘90s through the early ‘00s. I think it still kind of exists online. It was crazy. Pretty much all high end vintage stuff. On top of that, there was the amp museum in the back of the store:

Thanks, hexes! I'm gonna have a look inside the chassis and as well see if I can figure out the speaker make/model tomorrow. Looking forward to checking out your clone build! Very cool! :)

I still remember the smell of that place too. It wasn't all high end stuff either. Got a few cheap amps there and my friend got a beat up 70s strat (at some point in the 90s when the prices were reasonable).

They had so many cool amps. :?

Yup. My work mates just asked what I was gasping and exclaiming at. Words fail.

You’re right, by ‘90s standards (or even early ‘00s), there was a lot of gear that was very affordable. Like I mentioned before, I remember $600 brown Deluxes and $400 brown Princetons. Hell, one of the blonde Twins was “only” $2000, which was a lot then, but is nothing for a pre-CBS amp these days.

Ten years ago Bitcoins were under $13, and yet this amp thing hurts a million times worse.
