Bassman. Tweed, black, silver, blonde, etc. I’ve also liked Mesa Marks with JM’s. Big clean Fender like bandmasters, supers, showman, twins. I like AC’s with JM’s when I’m just playing around but when I get that into a mix I wind up replacing it. Others make it sound great, like Marshalls. But it sounds wrong behind me. Too trebly, no low end.

I'm glad this is for "favorite", not "best".

Fender. For me, the Jazzmaster just has some kinda magic through a Fender amp with the styles I play.

My pedalboard loves going through a Marshall-type for mid-to-high gain, but at that point, the amp is a higher proportion of the sonic character than the guitar. Liked it through honky midrangey Southern rock amps, liked it through Mesas, and me and Mesas don't get along. Love it through JC120-style cleans, which have their own feel. Voxes sound great, though I only tried JM+AC15 for about a half hour years ago. Cleanish amps preferred at the end of my cable to be able to showcase the Jazzmaster tone.

Tubes preferred, vintage a plus, blah blah blah, but even solid state, if they've got a pretty solid clean channel. I've harped on about a '90s SS Deluxe 112 Plus I have that does a pretty good job at making the Jazzmaster sound different and special in "that" way. I added it to my live setup and it returned something I didn't quite realize had been missing.

But plug a Jazzmaster into a Fender for "clean-to-gritty" and jeeeeeez, it just clicks for me. Surf, twang, garage rock, shimmery shoegaze, country/rockabilly stuff, add some drive and you're in punk territory and beyond, without losing the balanced, kinda woody Jazzmaster tones until the fuzz knob completely takes over.

So, my super-clean Bassman Ten. Fender cleans, a little extra woompf, and a dash of added midrange. Sparkle and chime and a brute, to boot.

Not because it's the best. Because it's the one that's mine. So that's the one that's my favorite, because it makes a Jazzmaster sound like I want my Jazzmaster to sound.

Just for fun, I took my Jazzmaster to our monthly gig at the tiki sushi restaurant Kahuna Tiki Tu in North Hollywood. Normally, I just use my steel and ukulele, but we just added some surf tunes like Endless Summer so why not? I had to run the JM through my steel rig, which is a Nocturne Mystery Brain and Mr Black Dlx Dlx+, into a SF Princeton. I really liked the sound of the JM into this amp. Perhaps it’s the 10” speaker.

So, for now, my fav amp for JM is the 1x10 Princeton.

Too brief, need more!!!

Despite a couple of scratchy/sticky pots I'm really enjoying my Marshall Valvestate 8240 TBH. It's a proper "grunge era" amp that I picked up very cheaply late last year. One of the few amps out there with a stereo effects return and a proper spring reverb almost on par with my early JC120 and has an analog stereo chorus too.
I also have a 1964 AC30 but the Valvestate is the one I keep coming back to. Sometimes of course I fire up all 3 and run the effects back into the front of the JC and the Vox...

Funny, I always found Bassman amps (esp the heads) to be basically Marshalls. I love my JM with my '66 Bassman and jtm45 equally.

Well, I'd argue a Marshall is basically a Bassman...but that's just semantics. They definitely have a similar gain structure but I certainly prefer the scoop on the Fender and they're way less thin on the low end. Always room in my heart for a nice old plexi sound though, not gonna lie.

It’s the difference in the low end that messes me up. But I’ve made Marshalls work on back line. Roll the tone down on the JM and kill the presence and treble on the amp. I got an Origin 20 last year and I like it but it’s not a normal Marshall. It’s like my tweed Bassman with a high pass filter on it.

Yeah, the earliest Marshalls certainly came from some of the earlier Bassman but both builders took the circuits in pretty divergent directions but despite their wildly different circuits, they do still bring the same kinda rumble.

i have been screaming princeton praise at everyone for years. my surf rig is a brown princeton clone with either a 1x10 cabinet; or 2x10 and 1x15 when I want to get obnoxious. 10” speaker is magic. i get sad when people demand a 12” in a princeton.

great sounds in the video!

they still get squishy and do their thing up loud, but it’s nice to move a little more air with it. 4x10s are also magical.

I think a lot of this comes down to personal preference. The ones I really like are Vox AC-whatevers (vintage AC10 and AC50, Korg AC30 are the ones I owned and liked a lot), Marshalls - JTM and JMP styles, and of course Fenders - I prefer brownface amps, but tweeds are no slouches either.

How many rated watts do you reckon the stock sf speaker has?

IF it’s an oxford, it’d be a 10J4. a K oxford is 25 watts, so probably ~17-20 watts
