Russia war about to cut vacuum tube supply

Post by burpgun » Sat Mar 12, 2022 8:08 am

Well, another shoe drops in Russia's war on Ukraine. EHX warns vacuum tube supply is about in much shorter supply, given that a lot of those tubes are made in Russia. Wonder what this is going to do to tube amp costs. https://www.gearnews.com/mike-matthews- ... s-in-2022/

It'll be interesting to see how this affects tube amp manufacturers more broadly in the coming months/years for sure. That said, I'm happy to buy nothing from them going forward.

When the supply crunch arrives, I'd imagine it would spike prices for existing tube amps and drive more folks to modeled amps. I've got a tube Deluxe Reverb I never use and I know Fender makes a well regarded digital version. Prices get bad enough even the cork sniffers might make the shift.

There's a big tube factory in Shuguang, China and also one in Slovakia.

I wonder whether EHX or another company might turn their attention to improving the products coming out of those two manufacturing centers?

The Shuguang factory closed in (I think) 2019. The story was that it was located in a residential area and the local officials had it shut down. Also, there was a fire in an attached building; however, that supposedly was not the cause of the closing. A group of Shuguang workers split off and formed a new, separate company (Psvane) and they are selling their own branded tubes and are still advertising Shuguang tubes, albeit with a seeming emphasis on high-end audio tubes. Supposedly, the Shuguang factory was to be relocated in 2020 or 2021, but COVID was reported to have delayed that. I have seen posts online that the new Shuguang factory is slated to be opened in 2023; however, that seems pretty speculative to me.

I would note the New Sensor/EHX tubes are made in Russia by Russian workers; however, it is an American company. EHX owns the tooling machines. Unless the Russian government is getting some percentage of the profits, not buying EHX tubes (if they were available) is impacting an American company and the workers in Russia that have been employed there, not Russia, per-se. There has been talk in Russia of nationalizing US companies with interests in Russia. That of course would change things.

Just saw Deafheaven last week and they swapped out the Peavey tube heads for Quilters on the back line. Feels like we are on the verge of a shift away from tubes anyway.

I can't wait to see 2020 valves listed on Reveb/eBay at double prices and (justifiably) called "NOS"

time to stock up on some key sizes then maybe.

I've got a handful of those Baldwin tubes myself somewhere... really nice low-noise glass I've found.

Does anyone know where the new Mullards are made?

I've only got one tube amp, thankfully. But I'd like to try Mullards in it, and if those are Russian made, then that's a real bummer.

Yeah, they're made in the Reflektor factory in Russia. If you wanted to try Mullards, the new ones aren't really much different to the wealth of other modern Russian tubes IMHO.

Seems it has already arrived.
Went to order some spare tubes online for my two Vox amps and most models were out of stock. Finally managed to get what I needed (but not the JJ’s I wanted), but I imagine that customers that wait a couple of days ordering will have trouble getting tubes pretty soon.
