Picked up a new Electro-Hormonix mig 50
Decent but nothing special with the tone. The EQ is very lackluster …not much response.
**** Update****. I’m using the second input which is the bright channel because the first channel is too dark for my taste. I changed out the preamp tube for the second channel from my 12aX7 to a 12aY7 and I changed out the phase inverter from a 12aX7 to 12aT7. I’ve gone from 100% distorted tube in the second channel to a 45% distorted tube and down to a 60% distorted tube for the phase inverter. This is the same change up I did in my hot Rod Deville 212 and my Blues deluxe re-issue. Essentially, this has smoothed out the tone of the amp and made it warmer with much less harsh overtones. I’m using my early 1990s fender stage 112 as the cab for this Mig 50 amp. It’s all pushing through a 12 inch Celestion seventy-80 speaker which sounds really nice.

I've been curious about these having owned a few if the Russian ones. Always loved them but never used them a great deal so they got moved on. If I start another band I might be tempted to grab one as your synopsis seems positive
Silly Rabbit, don't you know scooped mids are for kids?

I used to play a Russian one through a Rhodes piano cab turned into a 2x12. Sounded MASSIVE. That one had a really great JMP thing happening. I think I ran 6550s in it?
I'm definitely interested in the new ones, but I wonder if bringing reasonable QA to the line will eliminate those occasionally magical weird things that the older models used to luck into.

After just six weeks with the stamp it has now gone down on me. I played it the other night and shut it down and then the next day I go to plug-in and it’s just a hum. I checked all the tubes and the bias and everything is good there. Off to an amp repair tech and see what the problem is. Over the past week aside from the normal hissing you hear from tube amps… I heard a little bit of a crackling fizz going on.

That's a bummer it crapped out on you. Hopefully its nothing serious, though surely it'd still be under warranty? (if you jam the original tubes back in and keep stumm).

I dropped it off today and the tech doesn’t believe it’s anything serious. At least it’s still Powers up and that’s a good sign. I called EH and left a message but of course they never returned my call. I’m not really worried about it to be honest unless the repair is astronomical. It’s a nice sounding amp with a tube swap for my taste… I look forward to getting it back. That's a bummer it crapped out on you. I was kinda hoping this production run would address the somewhat inconsistent reliability/cheap parts the older ones are reputed to have. Seems they kept the design more or less intact

That’s presumptuous to say at this point. Let’s wait and see when I pick it up what the actual problem was. If it continually goes down on a regular basis then I will be the first to say avoid this ampSeems they kept the design more or less intact

That's fair. Cards on the table I've never owned one but loved the couple of Sovteks I've played through. As a Bassman fan they're pretty familiar and I dig them as a rock amp. I hope it turns out to be a minor/one off thing as they're reasonably affordable even here in Australia so I'm somewhat keen to know if they're all good.musicmatty wrote: ↑Fri Sep 24, 2021 3:32 am[That’s presumptuous to say at this point. I got a call last night from the guy who’s working on this amp. He said it looks to be a bit complex and believes it’s the transformers. He recommends sending it back as it’s under warranty. I emailed EH last night, i’m waiting for their reply. Hopefully their customer service is better than this amp. Very disappointing considering it’s about six weeks old.

Most Retailers have a 45 day Return Policy.. Particularly Online Retailers.. If you’re still within that time period return it.. Do an Exchange or get a Refund to buy a different Amp..

I got a reply so I will proceed forward and hope for positive results.
Hi Matt,
I will send you a call tag, and set you up with a warranty repair. I just need your complete shipping address.
Thanks!
Chip

That's pretty quick of them - a good sign.
