slightly belated new amp day (finally got my other dream amp)

Post by s_mcsleazy » Tue Dec 22, 2020 4:23 pm

so. some background before i get to the new amp. so ever since i was a teenager, i'd see clips of a lot of the new york bands like television, talking heads and sonic youth playing silverface twins (when i think of sonic youth, i always think of the picture of them on brighton beach where lee is playing a twin) along with some of the british punk bands and always wanted a twin.

December 16th 2009 i got my 72 silverface bassman 50 and absolutely fell in love with it's sound. i often used to say it's how i was always meant to sound, but it had it's limits as an amp, it's more aggressive than it's not. which i love but at the same time, i also do a lot of cleans. so for the longest time, my friend was telling me "bassman and a twin reverb is the way to go" and when we would collaborate from time to time, he would let me borrow his twin and always loved how it sounded with my bassman.

sometime last year i bought a wem dominator in a charity shop and the dude that sold me it said "i much prefer the weight of this over my twin reverb" immediately i was curious. every time after that, i'd try teasing more information about his twin out of him. after a year or so, i figured out it was a 70's twin, the trem was broken but the reverb still worked. he also mentioned it never got a lot of use and he felt bad it never got a lot of use. i mentioned if he wanted to sell it, i'd give him a fair offer on it. after a few more visits, we arrange a time where i could buy it. December 16th 2020. the anniversary of me getting my bassman. so, enough talk, HAVE AT YOU..... with pictures.

and a size comparison (i'm 6ft2)

so, details sleazy, details. it's a 1979 twin reverb 135 with the ultra liner transformer (more than meets the eye) and it has a set of fane speakers in it, they look like the creschendo speakers but the label fell off so i'm not 100% sure. not my first choice for speakers but they sound really great. we stuck it on the scales and it weighs 39.2kg. the reverb is really smooth and subdued compared to most spring reverb amps i've used which i really like actually. i can't not play television on this thing. it feels like that's what the amp always wants to play.

i'm honestly hoping this is the last amp i'll buy for a long time.

Congrats on the amp! A friend of mine from high school had one and I always thought it sounded great. I’ve never played through one of the ultra linear ones, but I imagine it still has that glassy (but not brittle) SF cleans thing in spades. So, that TR/BM rig of yours must be able to paralyze people from 50 yards away, right? ;D Enjoy it in good health!

Great, man!!! Though I must confess I personally HATED the UL Twin when i had one for a while (or maybe it was really only because of the weight...?) Twins are just an essential part of RnR and everyone should have one.
I absolutely love mine (an early '68 silver face) so much that I brought it with me from Mexico, even though I need to use a step down tranny with/for it.

Best ~$200 ever spent ;D

Cheers!
i love delay SO much ...that i procrastinate all the time.

Nice one man. That must sound great when it's all lit up.

A huge amount of the music I love from the 60s and 70s was recorded using SFTRs, I have no space or actual need for one but just the fact that it is/was THE amp has often brought me almost to the point of pressing "Buy".

Enjoy the beast :D
relaxing alternative to doing actual work ...

that's part of the reason, i mean i joke that any time i play clean on it, i sound like tom verlaine so that must be a good sign.

hell, as much as i dislike kiss, i once read that behind all those walls of marshalls, they actually used a twin

honestly, the 2 amps make up for each other so well that it feels like nothing else.

I'm happy for ya man, congrats on the new amp. You'll never have to worry about not being loud enough ever again, as if that were an issue already having the bassman!

i'll also never have to worry about not having a sore back ever again.

fun fact. we bought 2 dolly's for moving big plantpots. they're called diall's. so we've named one brody diall and one salvador diall

Ha, well it is sinking into the Mississippi mud! I have a fourth Twin, but it is a brown ‘62 6g8-A and guess what? It’s by far the heaviest of them all!

yeah he used it on the last 2 fugazi albums in the studio. most the time in the studio before that, he'd switch between his AC30 and his park amp
