Reviving the old thread, as I did indeed pick up a J20 last summer. I am looking to use it as a grab and go to practice and I find this amp to be take your head off bright with my Jazzmasters. Just wondering if lgorilla is still digging the GC64 in the J20. Iā€™d like to knock some of the treble off and have plenty of efficiency. Mine is stock other than a recap job and a retubing.
Yes, you are right. The stock J20 is a very bright amp. Basically, it has the bright channel of brown Deluxe and even a brighter channel.
A simple mod described above (remove 470pF bright cap) on one channel and ad .003uF cap on other returns it to brown Deluxe specs.
GC64 takes even more brightness away without making the amp dull or muddy. It works with JM and Jag for me. This amp is a little gem.

Hope this helps.

I don't think I'm ready to take it to a tech for any kind of mods yet. More wondering if you were still liking that speaker in your amp two years on.

I don't know about modding my J-20 but one thing I did was connect an A-B-Y box to the two inputs. That way I can switch tones on the fly and the "Y" setting which runs both inputs sounds fullest and loudest.
