For anyone who still might be looking for a solution. I just got back from practice and trying a few things out in the rehearsal space. It was an EQ pedal that did the trick for me. I used the small mxr eq, boosted 800Hz a lot, 400Hz a little, and cut some 100Hz and the Dual Showman took on a much more JTM45 or Bassman character... even breaking up a lot earlier. I had the amp's bass set to 3, mids on 10, treble on 3, and volume on 7. I didn't need the PlexiTone pedal. The amp was breaking up nicely for classic punk / rock riffage, and a tube screamer like pedal with the gain down and vol up was all that was needed to get a little chunky on the palm muting or for leads. The pickup was a Mojotone '56 Quiet Coil P-90 that they say matches the output of 8.6K vintage P-90.
Without music, life would be a mistake.
