NAD Traynor YBA Mark 1

Post by Brock the Mod » Sun Sep 24, 2023 8:30 am

Pretty stoked I got one of these actually. The last 'head' I had was my 74 Hiwatt Custom 50 which I ended up selling due to hard times. These little Traynors have been on my radar for a while now, and I scored it at Caveman Music in Los Angeles (on hold till the 27th). Between my Twin, Pro Junior and this, I feel very satisfied for having an amp for every occasion and love the tube variety.

Image

I do need a cab for it though, and the tiny size of the head makes me want to grab a 1x12 cab that would fit perfectly on top. Im under the impression I have to get something 4 ohms or 8 ohms and not 16? Ive actually never owned a cabinet before :D Should I get a 2x12?

Trying to get a decent looking one unloaded and put in a high quality 12 inch speaker like Eminence or Alessandro but any OG'ers have experience with their traynors Id love to hear it :-*

I picked up one of these for like $300CDN about 8 or 9 years ago, loved it. Kinda old school Marshall-y but with its own thing going on, thickened up single coils really nicely and sounded massive with the inputs jumped. Those old Traynors were seriously the best value in the vintage tube amp world not to mention were really easy to work on. They've definitely gone up in price substantially the last few years sadly. Cabinet wise I'd go with what would serve your needs best. I ran mine into a 2x12 cab and it pushed a ton of volume..these have huge output transformers in them!

Nice score!

Yeah, these will be fine with 4 or 8 ohm. They originally came with a 6ohm cab (which is obviously weird) so either side of that will be fine. It'd probably be fine with 16 but an 8 works with almost everything so could perform extra duties if needed down the line.
Silly Rabbit, don't you know scooped mids are for kids?

Nice score! I've been half looking for one of these since using one at a gig where it was backline. It wasn't the loudest of amps but with everything at 10 it sounded righteous 8)

2x12 is the setup ive always enjoyed the most compared to 1x12 or 4x12. Ive also considered 1x15 to switch back and forth between bass and guitar but 15 inch for guitars always sounded stiff to me.

And like im sure these were better priced a decade ago but like was hasnt inflated in recent years lol

15s are good for guitar if you can find the right one. I used to use an Eminence Legend 15 for guitar about 8 or so years back and it sounded great...but the band I was in was a Drop-C# kinda thing so needed some low end strength.

10s are my favourites but in recent years I've just been using regular 12s for convenience.

I'm pretty sure Eminence do some 12s that are good for both, worth looking on their site. The only thing is, with a guitar cab for bass, it'll sound very old school. Unless you get one made with a removable port so you can pop it out for bass duties and pop it in for that sealed guitar cab vibe.

Formerly owned by Gwar? :D

That's a massive, but, great cabinet. How much is it? If you have the space and money you could do a lot worse.

Asking 350$ which isnt much more then the 2x12 or 1x12s I was looking at. It does kinda go against the point of the amp which is to carry a small head and a small cab for convience but those speakers are high quality from the sound of it.

Alessandro speakers were on my mind too

What kinda speaker cab configuration are you running?
I actually may need to pickup some of that cleaner up for my Pro Junior.

That doesn't seem that bad really. The speakers are probably about that for a pair anyway.

I'm the kind of mad hoarder that would buy it anyway and keep it in the garage or something for a rainy day :D

I have more of a upstairs 1 bedroom apartment setup :D but I actually do have space for something like this.
I just dont want it to feel like moving my twin reverb and throw out my back
Im going to LA to pickup the Traynor today and going to check out what they have for sale cabinet wise.
