I swapped out the Pro Reverb for a Bassman and I think I made the right choice

Sometimes I miss my 66 Bassman, but it’s more about missing the playing situations where a Bassman really shines. Definitely don’t need one for what I do now. Great amps though.

Oooh man, that opens up old wounds/memories...

Back in Mexico, when I basically had ALL the old blackface Fenders I had picked up for peanuts, I also went from Twin to Pro Reverb to the Bandmaster, and then to the Bassman.

Unfortunately, when I moved to Germany, i sold pretty much everything, except the Twin (1968).
I used to pick up the SF models for peanuts in the late 90's. I started with a Bassman though. Moved on to a Twin Reverb, traded it for a Vibrolux Reverb that I (never should have) traded for a Princeton Reverb. Eventually picked up another Bassman then traded it for a Bandmaster and then for another Twin Reverb and back to a Bassman. I eventually ended up with my BF Bassman. I had too many Bassman before I realized I like them much better with Greenbacks than with Jensen types.
Dude in my opinion the secret for the best Bassman (or guitar, at all) sound is 10 inch speakers!
I used my Bassman/s with an ancient Sunn 4x10 and it was glorious...
I've never played one of the Bassman heads through 10's before! The 5f6a sounds pretty glorious through 10's so it makes sense.

I justify mine primarily as my primary bass amp for low volume work and practice. I can also open it up just enough in my house for guitar too though ;D

Everything sounds great through 10's in my experience. I ran my OR120 either through a 4x10 or an old 70's SVT810 for many many years. Sovtek Mig50, JCM800... I don't think I've ever had time when I wasn't very happy with 10's pumping out the sound or my amp.

Kinda regretting selling off all my cabs in the great 2019 clear-out now

Nice. I’m sure my neighbors wouldn’t have minded, but the proceeds from the sale paid for a good chunk of my Swart AST, which is way more portable and plenty loud for what I do now.

I love it and have no regrets, but being in a band with glam leanings and doing the LP>Rat>Bassman thing sure was fun too.

Man, do you remember those old Sovtek hardwood 4x10 cabs that matched up with a hardwood cab Mig50 Tube Midget? I wanted that setup so bad but I was poor and in HS at the time.

Ahh, Swart. The amp everyone says they never should have sold. I've wanted one for years but it's always on the back burner and I've never had a good deal pop up for one. The STR is the one that haunts my dreams.

I have an STR Tremolo as well. Selling my Vibro Champ covered a lot of that, and I bought used of course. It’s a very loud 5 watts and sounds fantastic.

Once I accepted my identity as a middle aged guitar player it got easier to let stuff go and embrace the dadrock toanz.

So now I don’t have the grunty Bassman thing anymore, but that’s ok.

Has anyone tried one of these through an open-backed cabinet? I was listening through to the sound again and noticed I was missing that chimey, room-filling sound a little. I'm guessing I'd get more perceived loudness with an open cab as well? The room the band rehearses in isn't all that big but the cab is out into the room by about 5' so no fear of boominess and I tend to play smaller stages and open cabs always help there so everyone can hear each other better. Losing some bass response is likely a good thing on this as well as there more than I'll ever need on-tap from the tonestack!

Maybe I'll whip up a split back for the little Marshall 2x12 and I can test at next rehearsal. I have a spare sheet of ply in the garage somewhere that'll probably be big enough

I don't think I ever saw a Sovtek 410 but I always wanted one of the little vertical 212s that they made to sit perfectly under the Mig50. Made of pure unobtanium here though.

I've decided I'm going to throw a pair of Eminence Legend 1258's into the cab and see how those fair. I've used them before and I they're loud and clear and I think will suit the style of music I'm making these days. I've used the 10's of these before as well and loved those equally.

I think the low efficiency of the old Celestion G12T-75 speakers in the cab already were stifling the amp a little, and combined to 8ohm when I should really be at 4ohm.

those 800v heatshrink caps are hilarious. and I also always vote 10” speakers. 2x10 and 1x15 together is my usual rig.
