NAD Bumbox Lead 1

Post by HNB » Thu Oct 14, 2021 6:25 pm

It had pretty rave reviews online and I saw a used one on Guitar Center. I was looking for a low watt head so I can turn the volume up past one... LOL This seemed to fit the bill. It has a line out. The switch on the back cuts it from one watt to a half watt. :) Really cool head and sounds really nice. First time I have been able to crank a heads gain and master volume before.
This amp will deliver classic low end crackle and midrange crunch without taking the paint off the walls. At only 1w max, the Lead 1 delivers all tube response without the need of an attenuator or other load device. That means you aren't wasting power to get that cranked sound in your apartment or bedroom. The Lead 1 pushes a 4x12 effortlessly, so you won't need to buy a new cab to use with it. The Lead 1 performs best at conversational volumes even though there is more volume on tap.

Specifications
Controls Gain - Treble - Middle - Bass - Master Volume

Output impedance 8 ohms nominal, 4 and 16 safe also
Output power 1w max, 1/2w clean
Dimensions 15.5" x 7" x 7", 10lbs.

It is really light also. With the line out, it would work great to plug in to a slave amp for performances. It is perfect for playing at home. Max gain is not ear bleeding. It was designed off of the JMP or early Plexi amps in mind, so the gain cranked is more Ramones type than metal. (Which is what I was going for.)

That's so cool! I had a Red Bear amp when I was a teenager, that used a 6N1P in the preamp. Haven't heard mention of those in years and years.

This one looks like a lot of fun. Super low wattage tube amps kick ass.

I just ordered new tubes for fun based off of what people tend to dig for a JMP style amp and I was surprised that those 6N1P's seem to be specifically Russian made. (vs 12AX7's that you can get loads of different makers.)

It is pretty awesome. I really like being able to get the max volume sound without pissing off my wife. Very few of my amps are able to do that because they are so loud. I do have some, like my Orange head, with a master volume or attenuator, but they don't sound the same to me when you pull the power back. This was made to be quieter so it is fun just to turn it up. :)

I’m very interested in these. I am currently ampless and on the lookout for an amp that will be good for both playing at home and home recording. I’m also considering an AC10 or a Marshall Lead 12. Do you think this amp would be a good choice for a sole amp for someone with no plans to actually play live (or with a band at all)?

For sure. This one would be especially good since it has a line out that you could run into a mixer or similar device for home recording.
