Jag-Stang Bass Build (punkacc9)

Post by punkacc9 » Fri Feb 15, 2013 1:04 pm

Ok. I'm gonna build a Jag-Stang bass. I always loved the photoshop mockup of it and I have been interested in bass recently and was thinking of buying a mustang bass but I said fuck it, I never made a bass and I love that Jag-Stang bass mockup. I can't believe no one made it yet. I guess it is my duty to haha. So I am going to try and get it as close to that as possible. I am thinking of using a squier jaguar bass neck or if I can't use one of them, then a musicmaster bass neck. I printed out a scaled mustang bass pickguard picture and cut it out. It seems to be right. I placed that on my Jag-Stang template (tracing of my jag-stang) and it is looking hot. I am just gonna use a standard jag-stang body shape, not warping or resizing. Fuck that. So I traced the pickguard and i placed it 4 and a quarter inches from the end of the neck pocket. It cuts really close at the bottom horn there if you can see it. By the neck. So I reshaped it a bit. Looks good to me. I am not looking for exact specs. Just as close as possible. Then I just scaled up more of the mustang bass and placed the control plate, pickups, and bridge. I added the jaguar plate as well but moved it a little. In the photoshop picture they moved it over an existing screw so I just moved it a tad. Next step is to find my neck and send it along with the pickguard/body template to cooterfinger to make the body and pickguard. I'm pretty excited. This is gonna be a long build probably do to my money being tight but it will be awesome. Oh.. Going with Fiesta red and white pearl by the way! Some pics of the photoshop and the template I have done so far. Oh. And I will have HNB make me another kick ass waterslide!

I never liked jag-stangs but they makes a sweet bass! Are you going with with mustang/jbass pickup combo?

Oooh this is going to be awesome! I too am kind of surprised no one has tackled this yet. I remember then the picture of it first popped up a while back. This should be fun to watch. Have you thought about colors yet?

Looks really nice, I'd ditch the Jag style switches tho.

Yess! The body shape works so much better with a bass!

Same exact color as the photoshop and same pickups. Not sure of the jag plate. What would I use then? A toggle? I love toggles. Much simpler but the jag plate just seems right on this.

THIS ^^^
There's a natural continuity between it and the bridge/tailpiece.
I'll admit to scrunching up my face, when I read the subject... but this is a totally pleasant surprise 8)
Can't wait to see it finished.

Same here. I thought it was gonna be some ugly looking thing but that looks really nice. Unlike you tho, i do find the jag plate out of place. I think that only looks good when you have the upper chrome plate too. Easy enough to mod back and forth tho...

Does this look ok or does it need the Jaguar switch plate? Never been a fan of the Jaguar switch plate on a mustang horn. Then I will have the concentric knobs for volume and tone of each pickup.

Update: Fuck it. I just bought a Mikey way bass. It's on it's way to cooter. He's ordering the wood on Monday. The build has begun. The Jag-Stang 3.0 is on hold.

Selling the body, guard, and humbucker... (check cassifieds) As cool as they are... I might buy one of these just to keep stock one day. They're nice as hell. I decided it just made sense to buy one of these to rob the parts I needed. Plus I wanted the rosewood fretboard and the standard squier only came in maple.. Just need some mustang pups, jazz bass pup, and mustang knobs now. As for the neck, I am having HNB make me a custom Jag-Stang Bass logo like the photoshop. I am also thinking about staining the neck and glossing it like a Fender Mustang neck. Here's some pics:

I would suggest (aesthetically) a jazz bass or even precision bass pup instead of the mustang bass pup, it just looks off.

Awesome!
