My top five covers:

5. Sun City Girls - The Shining Path (Kaoma)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COBjxhmm7Wo

4. Ulver - Solitude (Black Sabbath)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXl4znQZOpw

3. The Animals - House of the Rising Sun (Bob Dylan)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmdPQp6Jcdk
(Sure, it's a traditional tune, but from what I recall if it hadn't been for Dylan, Eric Burdon might never have heard it, so I think it counts.)

2. Alive She Died - She's Lost Control (Joy Division)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGXXOQVEQsw

1. Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower (Bob Dylan)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZTPsrcfQSE
(Yeah, sometimes Captain Obvious just has to strike.)

And a few others that deserve mention:

A Place to Bury Strangers - Suffragette City (David Bowie) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hebF0fBIst8
Spacemen 3 - Starship (Sun Ra / The MC5) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFp9nJbnRfk
Ebba Grön - Staten & Kapitalet (Blå Tåget) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5vvrUrBuQQ

I love their cover of Mary Anne :)
You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.

Talking about Hendrix : also Howlin Wolf's "Killing Floor".
The intro guitar riff is ... well, no words good enough for it. :-*

Can't believe that one hasn't been mentioned yet. It's funny how cheesy the original sounds, especially after listing to his version.

I was prepared to hate this (can't stand CSNY), and I don't, but I still think the original is far better and plenty bad-ass on it's own.
Matthew's Southern Comfort has the best version of Woodstock, hands down.

Infinitely better than CSNY's cover, but the original is still my favorite.

speaking of Nirvana covers, Deer Tick playing as Deervana is a pretty awesome thing.
