CIJ Jaguar vs. Jazzmaster tone comparisons...please

Post by sleepingtiger » Thu Mar 15, 2007 1:36 pm

I hope I'm not opening a can of worms here, but I'd love it if some of you could give me some generalized comparisons of the 2 models. I like the short scale of the Jag, but do know I like the tone of a JM. Opinions please? Apologies if this is redundant.
Thanks,
Tony

I think you are opening up a can of worms.  But that is okay by me.  Word is that the Fender Japan Jaguar pickups are fair (at best) facsimiles of AVRI and the originals but the Jazzmaster pickups not so much. Not bad, mind you, just more Strat-like than the Jazzmaster ought to sound.  Here is a website that has samples of the AVRI and vintage Jaguars and Jazzmasters.  This may be a good place to start.  Clean tone, though, but you'll get the idea.

http://www.webrocker.de/jaguar/v2/index ... _jm_sounds

Now for my 2 cents worth:  I own a CIJ Jaguar and swapped out the stock pickups with AVRIs.  It was a nice, but not huge, difference.  The AVRIs are more "vintage" sounding, more polite, less squealy, and less buzzy.

This will probably NOT help you in ay way, but here is my 2cents anyway  :D

I want a Jaguar, as i need a S/C guitar.

I will probably get a MIJ/CIJ model from the UK - in the next 24 months.
When i do, i will look into the Seymour Duncan Jag-replacements units, as i heard from many Britts that the stock pu's does NOT sound like the tue vintage pu's from the 60's !

Does this help at all ???

well, the CIJ jag pickups actually do have some of the "real" jag sound, they just aren´t very good pickups. they produce lots of feedback, and are pretty cold sounding.

the CIJ jazzmaster pups on the other hand are pretty decent pickups, but they are constructed more like strat pickups and therefore sound very different from real jazzmaster pickups.

replacement pickups are generally recommended for both.

the main differences between the CIJ jags and JMs are:

jag has brighter pickups, JM has mellower pickups with more output
jag has two on/off pup switches and a bass-cut, the JM has a 3 position toggle
jag is 24" scale, JM is 25.5"

all this results in the jag being a very bright and punchy sounding guitar, while the jazzmaster is more smooth sounding, with a bit more sustain.

Thanks guys, I went ahead & ordered a JM. Blocks & binding, should be cool. I just hope the OCR isn't TOO much darker than regular CAR.
If I don't like the pickups, I have someone already researching a source for bobbins to wind some. It's good to have talented friends, hehe!

One turns up used every now and then..

All the B&B JMs/Jags from Japan have matching headstocks (except sunburst y'know) I think.

Does Ishibashi still have new B&B offsets in stock? That's cool.
