Bass VI folk...

Post by jagermeister » Thu Mar 08, 2007 8:46 am

sorry if this has been done before...

But I just managed to pull a Token on the bass so to speak, and my singer now wants me to play bass on a few songs...

I have a bass ATM, but I've been thinking about a Bass VI proj so I can still look cool B) ... I've played one only briefly without an amp, interesting thing. What do you use it for? Would it work as a bass, more or less, or does it err too much on the guitar side? What sort of amp would it be used through, guitar or bass?

I used the search function but couldn't find anything recent or specific... unless  I missed something in which case presume me to be drunk

I use mine for bass, guitar, and somewhere in between the two. IMO, it will work pretty well as a bass substitute. It sounds much better as a bass than my '71 Musicmaster bass for somewhat of a comparison. I use mine through guitar amps and it delivers all the lows I like.

I have a Jaguar Baritone Custom (similar scale length as a bass VI also tuned E-E) and it works more towards the bass end. It sounds great plucked with a pick or fingered, and it's an easy switch from guitar to it. Strumming works out better on the high strings, but a low E chord will work, you just have to be careful about how hard you hit the low E string. I play it through my silverface super reverb and it sounds great. It took some getting used to, and I found that my bass playing style has changed a bit from using it. Since the scale isn't as long as my gibson or my old Jazzbass I do more intricate walking patterns, and throw chords in more often.
The Jaguar Baritone Custom is a great option as a tester to see if you would like a bass VI cause it cost about 1/3 of the price or less.
Why should we buy postage stamps? We can make our own.

Unexpected versatality.
I got a Bass VI to function as a baritone guitar but ended up using it for everything: bass gigs; a trio of drums, frontman, bass VI, (something inbetween bass and guitar - both and neither...).

Lately I'm in a trio gig as a bassist, but am encouraged to play chords and supporting lead/melody lines.
I use a bass amp and a Pignose G40V to cover the upper mids and highs - like a 5 tube tweeter.
It is the most rightgeous instrument I have ever owned.

I was wondering, is the high E on a Bass VI the same as the low E on a standard mid range guitar?

No
It's the same pitch as the E on the D string [2nd fret]
'Can also be looked at as an Octave Guitar

Oh right, so the VI can get some more guitar-y tones as well.

It could be sold, I don't know. When the Rosewood tele was mentioned I just looked for some links to it to show how famous it really was.

I thought it sold years ago. Like, a long time ago.
