getting decals off...

Post by fuzzking » Tue Mar 06, 2007 1:16 am

me again. I've taken apart the 64JM, cleaning it and everything.
Years ago, after re-finishing a totally wrong decal had been applied
and I want to replace it with one of the nice ones I made. How can I
get the old one off without doing harm to the nitro?

Thanks, Michael

You could try working some warm soapy water into it. Let it soak through the decal and you might be able to ease it off with your fingers. It just a thought as its something I have never done before, but maybe worth a shot as I don't think it would do any damage to the lacquer.

Was the refin logo applied on top of the nitro or were another few layers of Nitro applied over it?  Personally I always apply a few more layers of Nitro to seal the logo in a bit - there is no worse moment I can remember than the time I played my first vintage JM, put a capo on the headstock for a song and noticed I took a piece of the logo off  with it when I removed the capo.

...anyway, back to topic - a good way to take off the logo slowly if the above method doesn't work might be to get some of that car buffing compound and just hand rub the finish.  It will take off very small quantitites at a time and would allow you to scrub off the logo with minimum removal of any nitro.

It's just applied on the nitro. But that thing is really stuck on there...
I've triad warm soapy water but that didn't really help. The car buffing
compound might do it... The capo on the headstock mistake was exactly
what happened when I got the Jaguar as my 1st Vintage Guitar, dang.

As I posted in another thread, get some MicroSol products. The Microsol softens the decal and makes it adhere better when it dries, but it also softens it so you can gently scrape it off with a razor blade. Just make sure you put some scotch tape on the ends of the razor blade, and keep the middle part free of tape. This will prevent you from scraping the neck finish. Both the microsol decal products are available at most stores that sell model car, airplane and so forth.

I stole some of mom's nail polish and it did the job.
The decal came off very slowly, but it's gone for good!
Thanks for the tips!

cheers, m

if you are talking nail polish remover, that will definitly work, it's acetone. it will remove finish too if not careful.
