Difference between Jag and JM body shapes

Post by 1946dodge » Sun Mar 04, 2007 8:09 am

Mad Mike on the 24 inch scale thread said this:
Actually, the Jagmaster is more of a Jazzmaster body shape, in person it looks a little different, the upper horn is a little more blunt like a Jazzmaster, and the body is a hair wider in some places.  I think the body is Jazzmaster style more than it is Jaguar, also, the countours feel different.
How different and in what ways are the bodies of the Jag and JM, (aside for the cutouts of course).
I have my 60's  Jag and JM next to each other and cannot see much, except for the upper horn on the Jag is a litte sharper and thinner than on the JM.

Or is it my imagination?

No, it's not your imagination. I think the upper horn is where the main differences lie. The Jaguar's cutout is slightly deeper, making the horn look thinner and pointier than the JM's upper horn.

Edited to add:

I'm not saying these are the only differences, but they are certainly the most noticeable. Someone else might know of others.

Yea you are right!
Are the pickguards the same shape - including the chrome pieces on the Jag?

Certainly not.
The Jaguar is a 24" scale vs. 25.5" on a Jazzmaster.
The pickguard is far shorther (neck heel to bridge) than on a Jazzmaster.
The only common parts are :

- bridge (and the thimbles)
- Switchcraft switches
- string tree
- tuning pegs
- neck plate
- pots (rythm & lead circuits)
- strap buttons
