I don't see a hole from a Kluson high E, so I would assume they are original. Or at least that it came stock with the F keys and not Klusons.

That pickguard looks a lot like the guards that came on JMs in the 70s to me so it may be unoriginal, or an original replacement as well.  I still think it's a pretty good deal for under 2k.

I meant original F tuners.. I'm sure they are, I was just saying if I were him I'd like to be sure if they're original and not the newer ones that you have to widen the tuner holes for.

update.

he can't find a jazzmaster case.
it has a RI arm...

and perhaps the nail in the coffin.....

the neck is indeed refin'd.....despite another employee not thinking so previously.

he said there is a bit of overspray....and all he can make it is either an '13 or a T3'  my guess is the 13 strat code.

he said the body has the names  taurez/chambers/R vega, in it.......
wasn't sure if those names help date it at all.

orig shim in tact.

possibly 71/72 ?

thoughts?

I'd walk personally.. for $2k or slightly under you can definitely find one that's older and more original if you're patient.

i really beat him up with questions today, and i am fairly certain the price has dropped significantly.

what if this guitar comes down, under $1500?

well that's getting near AVRI prices so even with the issues -$1500 probably isn't too bad of a deal in comparison.. it really depends on what you want to spend and how original you require it to be. I get the impression you're like me and looking for a good player over a collectable so aside from the missing inlay and case if it plays well and is solid I'd make a low offer and see what sticks

Torres was stamped on quite a few early 70s necks. I think there's a Torres stamp on my '72 & '74 P basses. I'm not sure if you see it any earlier.

FWIW there's no Torres stamp on my '68 JM neck, which has a 13 code too.

I prefer non-refinished necks, but I've met a couple of nice refinished ones so for me it's no longer the deal breaker it was .. I'd definitely go for it at $1500 if it played well, have you had the chance to play it?

i prefer a non-refin neck as well...but i need to put some time on the guitar to really get the feel.

my hookup on an avri is $1119.

i def. want a player.....and love the vintage feel......

i think i can strong arm him low. a 72 refin just went for $1200 on the bay.
