But I was surprised by how little they knew about Fenders in general (as in how to date them, etc) and the MM in particular..... Isn't it supposed to have two pickups?      ::)

Realizing you are probably joking somewhat too,  I think we do pretty well here! In the event of the occasional left-field answer answer, someone usually chimes in and straightens it out! But then again, our forum is pretty much specialized as opposed to just being dedicated to guitars in general.

Is that correct about 70s MMs trading in the $500-600 range on fleabay?  I've got a clean black '78 around that I never play.  Hmmmm...  That could go into offset bux! :)

The Musicmaster is an Offset. At least post-64 ones are.
