I like tortoise. If I can find one I like, I'll go with it on my new IBM AVRI. If not, I might try this, or this, or maybe even this.
Bigger in sum than parts.

Actually, I think white ones look pretty cool, but my sunburst Jag has a t'shell guard. Though it looks black in my avatar.

I love tortie best, but MOP looks killer with CAR and the gold hardware and black Jag has earned a  :? from me.

I really dislike the look of white pickguards on Jazzmasters and Jags.  To me, white 'guards are a Strat thing.

I sort of lucked into my gold guards, even though I prefer the old tortoise shell.  I've hated the idea of custom colors with gold guards in the past, but I couldn't pass mine up.  I  have definitely come around to them now, but I'd still kill for a Burgandy Mist Metallic with tortoise shell.

That's my current color combo, makes me think of 1970's homes with bars in the basement and carpet on the walls.
I prefer their older stuff.

Yep. Pre-CBS Tortoise all the way. I'm not so keen on the adonized guards, except on a nomaster posted on another thread. Natural wood, black pup covers, telecaster knobs & a gold guard. Fookin' inspired.

I used to hate black pickguards on sunburst (like the SRV $trat) until I saw this guitar and deemed it the most beautiful Jazzmaster I had ever seen.

Image

Your opinion may vary, of course, but this very guitar made me order a black pickguard for my Jazzmaster.  When I get my block and binding neck (and the white witch hat knobs!!!)  my perfect guitar will be complete.  (insert Dr. Evil laughing here)

I like black especially on the grainy ash bodies they used during that era...

Not on LPB surely, it's gotta be a white guard.
Here's my latest re-fin - Its an AV jazzmaster that had a run-in with a pedal board,  so it needed a new paint job.  I thought I'd prefer the mint guard,  but I've gotten to like the tort - even if it isn't vintage.
