Pretty much any kind of cream masking tape will work well and look good.

I'd just search eBay for "VINTAGE PRE CBS ADHESIVE TAPE! VINTAGE MOJO NR NIB WOW L@@K!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1"

Works every time.
I prefer their older stuff.

NOT ANY KIND OF TAPE WILL WORK OK FOR THIS!

pre-'62 tape had three "teeth" at each end....post '62 was four....and by 1965, the tape had no teeth, and the colour was changed to bright white.

50s tape (as used on also strats) is rare as hen's teeth, but will yield the best results...it improves sustain...the notes just bloom, and it also improves the player's sex life.

:D

I kid, of course!

Well, you could use modern tape... but you'll need an NOS can of Pre-CBS adhesive to get the original stickiness. L@@k!
Unroll all the tape. Remove all the exiting adhesive with a 3M Scotch pad and some nitro thinner. Apply the NOS adhesive. Roll tape up on cardboard spool (original spools are available from Ed Roman).

It should take approx .2 in/lbs of pull to unwrap it. Test it with a spring meter. When it's right, cut it with the correct number of teeth (as explained above) and apply.

Of course this is all for naught if you have a poly finish, because the tape can't breathe.

Very true, my friend.

In this case, you will need the MIJ RI can of NOS Tape Adhesive...

DAMNIT!!!

I knew there was a reason why my Jazzblaster doesn't sound right... it's the TAPE!! I knew I should have traded my car for that roll of NOS preCBS tape!

This has to be the craziest thread ever!  If only my lack of sustain and stamina could be blamed on my lack of tape, vintage or otherwise! ;D
One more guitar, then I'll practice!
