Oh my god, have you got a picture of the headstock??
Here you go. It's really not that bad -- or maybe I'm just used to seeing it this way. But most people don't even notice until I point it out and then they're like "OH MY GOD WUUUUT!?"
damn, I think I actually prefer that?
Reminds me of an Ibanez Blazer headstock.

I have to say, there is way more than enough skill on OSG to remake that headstock like you never knew it was gone!

I legit shed a tear for that one. My mutilated Starcaster looks positively
radiant by comparison.

The neck really is incredible, a bit bigger than my Jazzmasters but very comfortable. I'm not sure if it was refretted, but the frets are getting on towards jumbo sized, which suits me perfectly. In fact after playing this guitar for a bit I had my 61 JM refretted with similar size jumbos.
would you say they are 'vintage jumbo' frets? a bit wider, but not especially tall?
most of the close up fotos of original Starcaster frets that i've seen seem to indicate that to my eye.

i guess by 1977 Fender wondered, "so, what's it gonna take to get folks excited about the Starcaster"
maybe something like this?

Easy: just a Starcaster-y version of the Deimel layout:
(Yes, I've thought about this... a LOT!)

Sidenote, their use in this headstock is a proof of the greatness of split post tuners, even if they needed through -holes ones for the paired strings, they still kept the traditional ones for the rest, because Deimel know what's good.

All the Starcasters I've played with original frets had decent size ones. I'd say Gibson-esque, in fact, funnily enough!

you demonstrate good sense here.
perhaps you should be in charge of the Starcaster XII development.
i was trying to picture a Starcaster swoop/Electric XII hockey stick hybrid
??

as much as i want to run away, it makes a lot more sense than such treatment to a Star.
yes, i'm trying to coin the abbreviation 'Star' as guitar shorthand, like 'Strat', 'Tele', etc...
