The Maxon AD900 Appreciation Thread.....
yup, gonna give my favorite delay pedal some love today...it has prevailed over every analog delay I have owned or tried extensively (through different amps and different guitars too)
The only way I can describe the sound is "Chocolate flakes falling from the sky slowly"....I love the thickness of the repeats, and I fiind the 12V higher headroom is a perfect match for the huge boost the Zvex Super Duper I use in front, puts through.
for the record, I have the 2-Chip version....it uses two MN3005's...here's a pic of my pedal's insides:
For reference,
The analog delays I've owned in the past have been: Boss DM2, Boss DM3 and Morley Emerald Echo.....I really liked the DM2 I had...but I found the AD900 had something extra that I can't put my finger on (plus the obvious twice the amount of delay)
The delays I've tried: Quicksilver, EchoTap, Boss DD3, Boss DD5, EH Memory Man etc.
anyone else here using one?
my usual setting is (left to right) 11 o clock, 12.30, 1 o clock.....what are your favorite settings etc?

I haven't had a chance to try one of those out first hand, but I love the sounds I've heard on recordings using them. I think you're right about the headroom thing... the old maxon AD80 I have runs on 18 volts and it really seems to make it react differently. I think I like the Maxon and Ibanez analog delays a fair bit more than the DM-3.

All I have is an Ibanez AD-9 reissue...

No, it's not. No disrespect to flatfiver, but yeah, I tried out one of the Ibanez AD-9 reissues and hated it.zhivago wrote:why the sad face?flatfiver wrote: All I have is an Ibanez AD-9 reissue...

Re: The Maxon AD900 Appreciation Thread.....
I had one of the RI AD9s that I really, really liked after tweaking the internal trim pots slightly. It sounded much darker and thicker than the DM-3 (although I traded away the AD9 and kept the DM-3 due to collectibility reasons.... ). And in that respect (dark, fat, smooth), I find that the AD80 has those same qualities, just a bit more, dare I say, refined. And then from what I have heard, the AD900 and to a slightly lesser extent, the AD999 have that same kind of uniqueness to the sound.

About all I could get out of it was mud. Admittedly, I didn't get to tweak the trims, because it was a loan from a shop, but all it did was make crunchy noises that didn't even sound cool. It had no pizzazz y'know? The echoes didn't say "I'm back, embrace me as you did the initial note!" No, they just kind of slunkered away into the rear lower left hand corner of my speaker cab and said "GehFuuddj,jemehluckannoodle..buh..."

What's the difference between the AD900 and the AD999?
Times change. Remember when dog Jimmy used to go white and chalky? Now it grows hair! We got used to it. We'll get used to poly. -blueavenger

Re: The Maxon AD900 Appreciation Thread.....
Basically, the 900 is around 600ms and the 999 closer to 900ms. Beyond that, I'm not too sure how/if the circuitry was changed much. The earlier 900s (like John's) used two chipes and the later ones 4. I'm not sure about the 999. I've heard several people say that the 999 is not as good sounding as the 900, but I know several people who have/ had them and liked them (999s) quite a bit.FireAarro wrote: What's the difference between the AD900 and the AD999?

Mostly because I can't contribute to the AD-900 love! But also a little because the Maxon AD-9 RI and the 900/999 are supposed to be so much better! I'm not really a delay guy, though, so I'm pretty well satisfied with what I got.zhivago wrote:why the sad face?flatfiver wrote: All I have is an Ibanez AD-9 reissue...

Re: The Maxon AD900 Appreciation Thread.....
that's pretty much it....also another difference is the AD900 runs on 12V, but the AD999 runs on 9V...so there's less headroom with the AD999i love sharin foo wrote:Basically, the 900 is around 600ms and the 999 closer to 900ms.
