Shell Pink with Tinted Nitro

I've been giving this some thought lately, as I noticed my repro green pickguard has, after about 15 years aging, reached a colour that in no way resembles a vintage guard anymore. I think there is a problem with fake aging.. when an aged finish starts aging by itself, it may turn to something way too dark. I'm expecting those tinted amber finished necks to turn poo brown by themselves in a decade or so.
So I guess I'm in the "no tinted lacquer" camp.

The way to do it is to dye the wood, because the coloration over the years is not only taking place in the nitro.
I've seen some necks done by good luthiers who first dye the neck itself and they are so much closer to a vintage neck
than, let's say, the re-issues. I think staining the wood some and then only minimally tinting the nitro will look much better in
the first place and will be less prone to have a superartificial look over time.

Doug, given the results of the 66 foam green jag I finished a couple on months back, I would go for clear....  however as well as totally agreeing with the Doc, I think normal clear will look great (as mine does) on the old/cured neck wood....  40 year old wood looks great, not pale like modern/young woods....

I agree completely on the neck. I always stain them with "colonial maple" and then use regular clear nitro.

But I was referring to the body here, though the same principle may apply as for artificial yellow. The sun (or a UV lamp) over regular clear is probably a better idea.

At any rate, I may be able to shoot the first coats of non-tinted clear tomorrow...

Have fun with the clear... You can always take it slow and see how you like this result first.

...can't wait to clearcoat my orange body, too.

BTW: I had a clear nitro neck under an old tanning bed (thus UV heavy) for more than 20 hrs. with no visible result yet

You may want to use DEFT clear nitro cans because it doesn't yellow.  Sandwich a mist coat or two of tinted clear in between multiple Deft clear coats and the finish basically will not yellow anymore.
I learned this from the reranch and it seems like it would give you what you desire.

No matter which you go for, it'll look good. Take your time with it. Don't rush into anything.

My vote is "no yellow" as well.

This is very interesting to me and I had a pretty good feeling that this was the news everyone was going to be talking about in a decade.  If I wanted to do a vintage tinit on a neck or body, I would do what Frank Ford does and leave a jar of lacquer on my rooftop until it turns just the right shade of amber.

I'm a heavy smoker, so I thought the darker colour was just  tar that would wash off, but no, it doesn't.

the AVRI mint guard chrisjedijane gave me (for free) for my charcoal frost project has gone through a similar transformation, the exposed areas have gone lighter and less green compared to under the knob skirts and the bridge.

i had a daphne blue jazz bass that i had sitting by a window for 8 months and it just showed a hint of yellowing.

I have a 2001 CS strat in daphne Blue and I have just noticed that the nitro clear coat on the backside and lower edge are turning yellow (like that blue tele).  The bottom edge and backside are the two sides that see more sun (light) than the rest of the finish as they sit in the guitar stands. The room itself only gets direct sun light for 20 minutes in the early morning.
