I wonder if he still owns it..or if it was a studio rental...I think the photo is meant to be Dog Man Star recording era.

I wonder if it could have been a custom-made replacement neck? I mean, most of the Electric XII was produced in the block inlay era, it was only 1965 and part of 1966 that they had dots, right? So it would have had to be a custom maple neck order in the first year or so of production. Fender sometimes did some real stuff, but my gut says someone might have built it to replace a damage or undesired neck.

It's possible...what throws me off is that it looks like it has the correct decal, and back then getting any replacement Fender decal, let alone an Electric XII would have been tricky...but it is a possibility...maybe even just a replaced rosewood fretboard to a maple cap fretboard...?mbene085 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 29, 2020 10:28 pmI wonder if it could have been a custom-made replacement neck? A definite mystery of a guitar...I guess we will most likely never know.

Remember that Robert Smith also used a maple neck XII while in The Banshees. Must've been a UK import only thing?

That guitar, and the original one posted above, are so sick! Had no clue these were made.OffYourFace wrote: ↑Tue Jun 30, 2020 11:23 amRemember that Robert Smith also used a maple neck XII while in The Banshees. Must've been a UK import only thing?

Robert Smith (presumably) still owns his, it made some occasional Cure appearances circa 2000:
