I think it’s great that (the majority of) OSG doesn’t indulge in anti-strat snobbery.
Not liking a guitar because of the way it feels or sounds is a legitimate reason, but not liking a guitar because of it’s association with X, Y or Z is pretty silly.
As a thought....in 20 years the next generation might view offsets as cliched “dad guitars” and start a wave of anti-offset snobbery!
Strats, Teles, Offsets, weirdos.....i love them all in different ways.

I would suggest that 'associations' are a major reason why people like offsets ... in fact that applies to all guitars. So if it's OK to like guitars because of their associations, ergo it must be OK to not like them for similar reasons. If it was just sound/feel that got people playing particular guitars, most guitarists would probably be playing PRS's. They're arguably the best made of the widely available guitars at several price points, they have the fewest problems, and they make a range of sounds. Unfortunately they mostly look horrible .. IMHO .. and are often played by players I don't like ... some people even avoid them just because they don't like Paul Reed Smith ... viz ... associations.

Strats have a very distinctive set of sounds though, especially the out of phase "cluck" positions. A lot of corny crap has been recorded with those sounds.
A lot of players I like have used Strats too though (Richard Lloyd, Johnny Marr, Kimberly Rew, Ira Kaplan, etc...) and I like what THEY do with those sounds.
It's just a guitar that's hard to find my own voice on due to all the sonic baggage. I have a terrible time writing anything on a Strat.

Don't you mean OSG+Teles?sookwinder wrote: ↑Sun Jun 28, 2020 5:15 amWhen do we change the name of the forum to OSG+Strats ?
Or maybe OSG+Guitars We Used To Hate ?
Seems to me the Telecaster is most-loved after Offsets on here (and quite rightly so). If we're having a name-change I'd like to propose we add a +335-type Archtops in there as well.

Agreed! Not a fan of the “in between” sound at all.marqueemoon wrote: ↑Mon Jun 29, 2020 10:17 pmStrats have a very distinctive set of sounds though, especially the out of phase "cluck" positions. A lot of corny crap has been recorded with those sounds.

Last year I considered getting a squier and modding it to be like Lenny Kaye's
just the middle pickup, maybe it's a stupid mod but there's something about it that appeals to me.

It seems to me from what I read on this forum that the most liked Fender guitars on here are (in order):
Telecaster
Jazzmaster
Jaguar
Telecaster/Jazzmaster hybrids
Bass VI
Other
Stratocaster
Mustang
(this does not reflect my own preferences)

We've done polls before. Jazzmaster and Jaguar were usually at the top. Telecasters always score high, but never number 1.
If memory serves me correct, this forum was built by expats from TDPRI.
My first electric was a Telecaster, and I still love them. I play mine often, but JM is top for me. I am a frequent vibrato user, so I couldn't handle just having a Tele. Also, the slab body gets uncomfortable in some situations.

I should clarify that I didn't mean the resulting order if everyone was asked 'what is your favourite guitar' but rather the order in which they seem to me to get the most positive attention.
A high amount of Strat talk (pun intended) is negative, and finding comments about Mustangs is like needles in haystacks "I've been trying to find posts/opinions about this, all I can find is for the Jazzmaster or Jaguar"

@ohm-men - That's a cool story! Thanks for sharing!
I have tried Strats and I want to like them. Don't tell anyone but I am really a LP guy.
My preferred Fenders are by far Jazzmasters. Body shape, sounds, colours - just so cool!
Maybe I'll find a Strat someday.
