Someone has to start this, Kurt Cobain’s unplugged Martin brought over 6 million at auction yesterday.

wasn't the unplugged session the only time he used it?

also, yes i know the story that francis gave it to her dead beat boyfriend and he tried to sell it and all that crap.

I’ll just have to refinish it and change the pickups and it will be perfect.

The founder of Rode microphones bought it.

He used the guitar during the U.S. leg of the In Utero tour as well (of which the Unplugged in New York show was one stop).

Amazing result, the buyer said he wanted it "at all costs" so maybe it's a fluke after a couple well-heeled buyers got into a bidding war. But it certainly speaks volumes about the respect Nirvana is commanding in rock history (and perhaps soon other 90s era artists too).

prepare to get robbed.

as much as I don't want it in Love's hands, the dead beat bf doesn't deserve it either.

I hope the person who got it has good intentions and respect for this instruments history and it being a rad guitar on it's own.

He now has big plans for the guitar – he'll be touring it around galleries and art spaces for people to see. With the proceeds going to help artists.

He added: “It’s a big deal. I didn’t even buy it for me. I paid for it but I’m going to use it to highlight the plight of artists worldwide by touring it around and then I’m going to sell it and use the dough for that as well, later.”

Alright, that's good to read.

Maybe it'll end up at the EMP, that'd be ok.

Sounds like good intentions, of course the road to hell is paved with good intentions. I'm somehow not shocked by that amount of money being spent, I suppose because we Americans have an outsized percentage of the world's disposable income. I see it on a daily basis, some of my clientele have a ridiculous amount of money and even I have way too much stuff and want for nothing. Hopefully the new owner does use that instrument to help the less fortunate in some way, that would be a fitting legacy.

Well, I thought about it quite a bit. The amount of money is insane, of course, but still it makes sense in a way. Nirvana unplugged is one of the most iconic live performances in rock history. At least on par with Hendrix at Woodstock or Queen at Live Aid, but it has a whole different quality to it: while Hendrix is a rock guitar hero and Freddie Mercury a golden god of rock and they both are as much icons of what rock music is all about as it can get, Nirvana's unplugged session is much more intimate. It's fragile, goes much deeper and is strongly connected to Cobains death as some kind of modern martyr. So, people are much more emotionally connected to this performance, to the songs and the imagery of this performance. Think of all these flowers and candles.

On the other hand, Pat Smears' was the much more iconic guitar of that performance. I remember a lot of kids who had painted their guitars red, yellow and green in the 90s and referred to it as their "Nirvana guitar" (I was shocked when I found out that this guitar was actually red, white and blue...). But, of course, Pat isn't Kurt...

At least it was bought by what sounds like a good guy. Not hanging it in his McMansion somewhere, but going to allow people to view it and whatever else good he does with it.

I remember seeing that show when it came on, it was iconic. I personally liked the ones with Alice In Chains and STP better, but Nirvana was everyone’s shit back then, and kind of still is today. That guitar is as icon because of that show.

That’s a fuckTON of money though.
