I'm new here so if I am an idiot, let me know.
I will say if you want a "non muddy" HB, get a guitar with P90's
CUZ THEY AREN'T HUMBUCKERS!

Are people really talking about Dangerous Age still?
If so, they should stop. It was an embarrassing moment for all of us.
Sounds like warmed over Foreigner except not as inspired as Foreigner and having typed that I want to pull my eyes out of my head so I never have to cry any more.
These are the hum buckers you should get. Get this guitar.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

I certainly wouldn't call you "an idiot," but I don't entirely agree.Jazzmonster Jones wrote: ↑Sun Jun 14, 2020 2:10 pmI'm new here so if I am an idiot, let me know.

The only PAF-style humbuckers I've found to be "muddy" have either been unfortunately cheap pickups, or overwound at least somewhat, or have been attached to volume or tone pots that read substantially lower than the 500k target value.
Sadly, it's very common to have at least one of the above things going on, which is probably what gives humbuckers the reputation for being "muddy" to some. But I do think it's worth trying a nice, well-made PAF as originally designed, installed in a wiring harness with pots of the proper value.

Suggestions (that I could afford?)
I agree a lot of guitars are "miswired" or use some good components, mixed with other "not so good" components.
I recently purchased an Epi Dot Studio (168 dollars, plus tax) at a pawn shop, and it do sound cool, but it's not the same as my JM or Tele. Even my HB GT450 with P90's has more "grit".
I think I am biased as well, since I was raised on single coils. I always loved the added brightness of singles.
I left my last band because they insisted I use a borrowed guitar with humbuckers (a PRS of all things) to record our album. When the recording was in the can, I couldn't believe how gutless and without character it sounded. (generic?)
I know I am going to face a firing squad for this post.....fire away!

Re: School me on humbuckers for my first "gibson" style guitar.
I recently put some standard SD Seth Lovers in an Epiphone LP--because they have a brighter, but not too bright sound, and they are relatively cheap. LOVE how they sound (through an AC15), once I had tweaked the pickup heights. For THAT sound, which I now use about 25% of the time. There are things you can do with HBs on a set neck that you just can't really do on a Fender. It's just different.
