NGGD: Hahn 112

Post by Maggieo » Fri Jun 12, 2020 1:59 pm

New Green Guitar Day!

I was super on the fence about this, but I wound up watching an episode of "Classic Albums" about Steely Dan's "Aja," and got all nostalgic about Walter Becker, and my reluctance to part with one of my two Bowery Pine Teles melted away. Also, it didn't hurt that it's sparkle Sherwood Green...

You might be wondering about the whole Walter Becker thing. This didn't belong to him, but he and Chihoe Hahn worked together to design it.
The Model 112 is the first original body design from Hahn Guitars. Developed with Walter Becker over two years, the 112 seeks to be a new, iconic guitar that can cover all genres. The 112 has an alder body and maple neck with rosewood fingerboard. The pickups and hardware were designed specifically for the 112. With a 25.5" scale length, the 112 can be sparkling and clean, can ring like a piano, and can sing and growl with increasing amounts of gain. A true workhorse, we hope the 112 is a new classic -- providing something new by bringing so many great elements from the past.

The 112 has a .87" deep C contoured neck with medium jumbo frets, bone nut, Hahn "H" bridge (toploading or thru-body stringing option), Hahn compensated brass saddles, Hahn .10" stainless steel neck plate and stainless steel body ferrules. Tuners are Gotoh/Kluson. Electronics include CTS 250k pots, .047 orange drop capacitor, and CRL 3- or 5-way switch.

The Hahn 112 is finished with approximately twenty-five coats of nitrocellulose lacquer with a total finish thickness of approximately .004".

Weight is between 6 3/4 and 7 1/2 lbs.

Those pickups with the brass saddles, must sound pretty sweet.

Colour isn't for me, the shape is nice though.

It sounds wonderful. Plays like buttah!

The colour is amazing.
Not sold on the body shape. It looks like a Sears catalogue Hondo.
Love the rest of it. Pickguard is sweet and the hardware looks stellar.

Letting a good Tele go would be tough, but wow!

That chunky bridge is my favourite part of this guitar.

I noticed the high E is top loaded, while the rest are through the body.
Does that give the high E a slacker feel?

Not that I’ve noticed. Top loading seems to affect the lower strings more than the higher strings. My Hahn Tele is top loaded and it definitely feels slinkier.

It really was. But it was like the ghost of Walter Becker told me to do it.

You know what? I'm really taking to the pickups. The neck has the chime and dynamics of a Jazzmaster, but still has the focused beefiness of a P-90, which it is, but with slug magnets. The bridge is a Lindy Fralin P-90, so what's not to love? Together, there's that almost acoustic-sounding balance that the best Telecasters have.

Now, it didn't arrive that way- the pickups were jacked all the way up, the neck had zero bow and loads of buzz. But after taking it to my pal and master luthier, it's all sorted and I can see, feel and hear Walter's influence on it now.

Both are Lindy Fralin.
