1965 Jaguar on Reverb.....what do you think?
https://reverb.com/item/31843402-1965-f ... gold-w-ohc
What's everyones opinion of this guitar? Not looking to bash the seller, or anything like that. but looking for an honest opinion of the value of a guitar like this.

Way too expensive for a refin, no matter how well done is. In today's ebay and reverb market I'd say 2000-2300 is more adequate (and still kinda pricey).
edit: also, non-original pickguard, so probably a bit less.

Yep. Absurd price for a refin with replacement guard.
Remember, a refin is just a sunburst that has been devalued by removing the original finish. In this case, reduce the value even further, by replacing the guard.
I've said this before, but lots of people post refins on Reverb priced like their value is dropping 20-30% from the rare custom color jags they look like and not the adulterated sunbursts they actually are. There seems to be a market for taking original sunbursts in rough cosmetic shape and refinishing them, then marking them up by a grand or two.
The nicest refin is worth less than the most worn or stripped sunburst...because that's what it is. A worn or stripped sunburst that has been modified and devalued further. But, they're prettier and apparently easier to sell, because people have been conditioned that nice colour + 60's Fender = $$$$

Is it weird that I hate that it isn't even a custom color of it's day?

Ah, it looks good at first sight. But it looks like a new guitar...
Yes, I also would say the price is too high.
The rest sounds good.
Ask the seller for a better price if you are seriously interested.

Re: 1965 Jaguar on Reverb.....what do you think?
Thanks for the comments - Here's the deal with this guitar. I did the restoration. I bought it in March of 2006 on eBay, totally stripped and in parts. I was thrilled! A real live 1965 Fender Jaguar!
This was when you could buy a decent vintage Jag for a little more than a new AVRI reissue cost. This one was less.
This was my first vintage guitar, and my first vintage restoration. I made mistakes with this guitar. I learned a lot with this guitar. I swapped out parts I might not swap if I was doing it today.
There was evidence of it originally being a custom color black guitar. The original white pickguard was cracked and had been sanded, and I sold it for way too much money, along with the original "F" tuners and the original pickup covers.
The body was over-sanded, and I did my best to fix it. I didn't want to paint black, but I should have. I picked Shoreline Gold, but I hated the color so much as I was painting it I sprayed it with amber neck tint until it turned to the color you see now.
I played it for several years with my surf band. I eventually sold it to Joey B, here on OSG. He beat the hell out of me on price, but I kind of needed the money. He sold it a few years later, and it popped up on Reverb a few months ago. I contacted the owner, and offered to buy it back. He wanted too much, but his price eventually dropped, and Mike and Mike bought it.
It's been fun watching this guitar move from person to person, and hear the stories that go along with it. "Famous surf band" was uttered by one seller, which is the funniest thing ever. I hope it finds a good home, and I hope I get to see it again down the road.

Whoa, cool story! What year is that Showman? I've got a 1960 that I play bass, Jaguar, and XII through.

Mike and Mike's are a pretty high profile brick and mortar shop with a big internet presence in one of the least affordable cities on the planet and a tendency to price things at the highest edges of reasonable. They also have a vested interest in driving prices on used instruments higher and higher so they can stay profitable. I imagine that they use reverb mostly for advertising and would sell the guitar for less in person without having to pay a seller fee and deal with packing shipping insuring, etc.

Re: 1965 Jaguar on Reverb.....what do you think?
It's always weird to see the same guitar bounce around on resale like that. I was looking at a CS Strat that I could find at least 3 separate Reverb sales in one year. That always seems like a red flag to me.
Also, just to speak to the price (and echo everyone else), I just bought an all-original 1965 Jag in Olympic White for about that price. AND it was featured in the Terry Foster Golden Age book.

Re: 1965 Jaguar on Reverb.....what do you think?
As others have said, WAY overpriced. I'm a fan of vintage refin Fenders because a really nice one is still marginally affordable if you do your due diligence so you don't get ripped off.
I live in Seattle and did two deals with Mike and Mikes quite a few years ago but they were both in person. Have not checked out their web presence in a long time. If this particular guitar is any indication, I probably won't be doing any more business with them.

Re: 1965 Jaguar on Reverb.....what do you think?
I agree that this is a high price for a reason. For what it’s worth the last few refinishes Mike and Mike’s have sold have gone for the mid-3000’s. I think that’s more than I would definitely pay, but they seem to have a market or at least the clientele willing to pay that for a good refin. Again, I’m not saying that most people would pay that. I don’t think that’s the case. But there seems to be some who will.
You are correct that Seattle is an extremely expensive place to live and to do business. There are a lot of local taxes on businesses that most ordinary folks don’t know about. That does constitute a big reason for their pricing stuff at the top of the market. I can vouch for the shop that they are among the nicest, most upfront, and transparent group of guys I know in the business. If you’re going to pay top of the market prices for guitars, that’s the place to do it.
As always, whenever you deal directly with the dealer outside of eBay or Reverb they have more flexibility since they’re not paying all the fees.

Re: 1965 Jaguar on Reverb.....what do you think?
I've bought two refin'd vintage Fender guitars on Reverb, a '63 Jazzmaster (CAR) and a '63 Jaguar (Oly White). Both refins were professionally done. Both of these guitars were less expensive than the non-refin '63 guitars that were up for sale at that time.
Based on the discussion of the '65 Jag refin, I guess I did OK on the '63 Jag as I got it for $3k in Apr 2018 from Fiesta Finishes. https://reverb.com/item/11197338-fender ... mpic-white
I paid a premium price for the '63 Jazzmaster, even though it was still the cheapest '63 Jazzmaster available on Reverb back in Feb 2018 at $4400 from Christopher's Garage. https://reverb.com/item/9420731-fender- ... -apple-red.
I had the funds to make both purchases happen by selling off other gear and a work bonus helped) so I suppose it's all relative.
I have no regrets for either purchase, as they are my birth year holy grail guitars and are a joy to play. I'll hang onto them for as long as I'll be able to play them and by the time I ever have to put them up for sale, I'll do OK on their future selling price in 20 or 30 years from now.
