AVRI/AV65 Jaguar Pups

Post by timiscott » Fri Feb 07, 2020 8:13 am

Someone on here the other day noted that the AO Jags have AVRI pick ups in them and I was wondering why. I've got a Jag with AV65s in it and they are spectacular pickups - even better than the PV65 JM ones, I'd say. Guess I'm wondering what the difference is and why Fender would make that decision.

I thought they were the same thing pretty much? I’ve seen websites/shops listing them under Pure Vintage, American Vintage, etc, etc, but always thought that!

I could be wrong, but I’m sure when I was getting my AO JM the pick ups were listed as AV65, and on the Fender website they’re PV65. The 60s Lacquer JM, the pups were listed as sometimes AV, other times PV too I think.

The AO60 has the 0054494000 (also 0054494049 )/0054491000 pair.
https://www.fmicassets.com/Damroot/Orig ... 6-2017.pdf
Fender describes them on the AO60 web page as "Two Pure Vintage ‘62 single-coil Jaguar pickups" ... the use of "Pure" here is confusing (the only time is has been used with "62" ?).*
https://shop.fender.com/en-US/electric- ... 10160.html

The AVRI62 also had the 0054494000(0054494049 )/0054491000 pair. They can be bought individually.

The AV65 had the 0094010000/0094011000 pair. They cannot be bought individually AFAIK ... it is assumed that the Pure Vintage 65 pair is the same thing.

*The "Pure" Vintage 65 aftermarket pair is 0992238000.

All of which - if I'm reading it correctly - still makes me wonder why Fender used the 62s, not 65s in the AO guitars.

Nah man, I have an American Original Jazzmaster and it’s PV65’s it has. It’s only the AVRI ‘62 that has the 62’s. The confusion is whether AV65 pups are the same as PV65’s, which I’m pretty sure they are.

We're talking jaguar. The AO jazzmaster has 65s. AO jaguar has 62s ( 0054494000/0054491000 ) ...

Ah didn’t realise it was only Jags we were talking about. PV65’s and AV65 pups are the same thing is what I’m saying though👍🏽

Fair point! Anyone know the difference between the 62 and 65 reissue pups though?

Cosmetically:

AVRI62: black bobbins, beveled pole pieces, cream pickup covers

AV65: grey flatwork, non-beveled pole pieces, eggshell pickup covers

As far as sound is concerned, I owned a set of AVRI 62 pickups for a while and thought they were perfectly fine, certainly nothing acutely needing replacement—until I swapped in an AV65 set on a whim. In my experience the 65’s are brighter, more dynamic/detailed, and more “3D” sounding than the AVRI set, which I found significantly darker and more lackluster. I scratch my head a bit at Fender’s choice to go with the 62 set in the AO’s.

Thank you - I did wonder. The 65 pups are absolutely fantastic so I was intrigued by the idea the 62s were better!

Do we know any of the tech specs that differ between the AV65's and AVRI62's ? eg things that changed around that time in the 1960s that may have been copied for the reissues ? 42 AWG formvar insulation vs plain enamel ? ~8500 winds ? Same (5?) or different Alnico ?*

There is an in-depth technical performance analysis of the Pure Vintage 65 (Alnico 5) aftermarket pair (plus a CIJ set) ...

As we know, the PV65 pole pieces are not staggered, as I believe they would have been circa 1964 (although one also sees unstaggered from that time) ...

*By comparison re magnets, Seymour Duncan's jaguar offerings cover both Alnico 2 and Alnico 5 ...

To my ears, the 62 AVRI pups sound darker, fuller and hotter than the vintage pups. Would love to see a PV/AV 65 set contrasted alongside them. Oh well...
