They're from my hometown of Leeds but I never actually got to see them.

Great band though, and a huge loss.

64 years old & only ill for a relatively short amount of time. It really puts things in perspective.

As usual, I was a bit late to the party with Gang of Four. They were one of those bands that I was vaguely aware of them from interviews with people who counted them an influence, but it never really occurred to me to actually, y'know, listen to them, until I did, and then the influence became immediately apparent. (See also: Hüsker Dü, Slint)

Anyway, I eventually picked up a copy of the "Return the Gift" compilation of re-recorded tracks, and it has sat in my car for the last several years getting frequent plays. I don't really drive much, and I have never got round to changing out the handful of CDs I bunged into it when I got it.

I saw them on their reformation tour six or seven years ago, and would have gone to see them again when they played Paisley in 2018, had it not been the same night as John Carpenter playing the Barrowlands.

You can definitely hear Andy Gill's influence all over the place - RIP.

Return the Gift is very good, actually.

The re-recorded version of Damaged Goods on Return the Gift is arguably better than the original, which I would not have thought possible ... Gill's unique guitar sound still conveys the excitement of the time (it was their first single, so the first thing I ever heard from GO4, circa 1979) ...

i always suspected i heard Gill's influence in the intro "Feeling Gravity's Pull," then learned REM in fact toured with Go4 in 1981 ... ah, of course!

Like I said in the other thread in the Misc Discussion forum I saw GO4 with AG in November last year (2019) and he/they were brilliant, even if he was the only original member left. The thing was that they had actually meant to tour here in March but they had to postpone the tour because AG was sick with a respiratory illness and couldn't fly, so it seems like he had some illness/issues for a while. 64 is still way to young.
