Re: Recommend me a bass overdrive please.
I like the sound, but I just realized, especially considering that I'd be interested in one for bass, that it doesn't have a blend knob...

Probably a bit late to this, but my favourite bass overdrive has always been the Boss ODB-3. Sounds great and has a blend control.
Even better, it sounds immense on guitar. Crazy heavy and crazy detailed gain.

Yeah, since I've started using compressors more effectively (than I had been), the blend knob has really become important to me. If it's not an extreme compressor, it's less of a big deal, but it's got to have a really nice sound on its own, or it needs some blend.Shadoweclipse13 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 23, 2019 9:11 pmI like the sound, but I just realized, especially considering that I'd be interested in one for bass, that it doesn't have a blend knob...
Sometimes it just needs some blend anyway, what the hell...

Re: Recommend me a bass overdrive please.
Yeah, I’m all about the blend with my compressor.
Finally got to try the Vintage Microtubes at practice last night. Really pleased with it. Just gives the sound a subtle lift. There’s one song where a drop to a lower octave during a guitar solo-ish part and with a little extra hair on the bass there it sounds huge.
The one thing I don’t love is the switching. It’s quiet and reliable, but it’s hard to get the timing right.

Re: Recommend me a bass overdrive please.
Agreed. It took me a LONG time to really get into using compressors, and longer still to use them correctly. It's funny, but the only one I've ever had with a blend is my current guitar board compressor.somanytoys wrote: ↑Thu Sep 26, 2019 11:30 amYeah, since I've started using compressors more effectively (than I had been), the blend knob has really become important to me. Is it a relay-based switch? Is there lag?marqueemoon wrote: ↑ The one thing I don’t love is the switching. It’s quiet and reliable, but it’s hard to get the timing right.

Re: Recommend me a bass overdrive please.
Interesting. I found a local shop that's got Darkglass stuff. I might go try out a Vintage Ultra this weekend. I'm curious if that's got the lag as well.

I'm not great at timing with switches (soft or hard switches), which is why I couldn't operate my Dittos in time worth a shit and sold them.
Nice it hear it's working out sound-wise, though.

Recently I've been using a Caline CP-18 Orange Burst for drive. Dirt cheap, and gives me the tone I want (kind of Lou Barlow).

Re: Recommend me a bass overdrive please.
I bought a used reverb pedal of theirs a while back for an ex-girlfriend. Can’t remember the name of it.
It wasn’t incredible, but it was pretty impressive for such an inexpensive pedal. $25 used...

I have a sort of related question that I didn't feel needed its own thread for: those of you guys who specifically use one of the Darkglass Ultra V2's (Alpha-Omega Ultra, Vintage Ultra, or B7K Ultra), do you use the cab sim mode much? I'm really interested in a Vintage Ultra, but I found some reviews about extra noise from the cab sim, and am not sure I'd use it that much anyways. Plus, I found a good deal on a V1 (no headphone jack or cab sim per Darkglass) for a lot less than a V2.

I’d personally rather use a software vs. hardware amp sim for bass for recording.Shadoweclipse13 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2019 1:18 amI have a sort of related question that I didn't feel needed its own thread for: those of you guys who specifically use one of the Darkglass Ultra V2's (Alpha-Omega Ultra, Vintage Ultra, or B7K Ultra), do you use the cab sim mode much? Live, people who run sound tend to insist on providing their own DI. That’s been my experience anyway.

Re: Recommend me a bass overdrive please.
Good to know! I finally found a local shop that has one in stock, so I might be able to try it. I prefer simple and don't like messing with hidden features and computerized parameters, so I likely wouldn't use it anyways. Sounds like I should be on the hunt for a V1 then. Thanks MarqueeMoon!marqueemoon wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2019 6:12 amI’d personally rather use a software vs. hardware amp sim for bass for recording.Shadoweclipse13 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2019 1:18 amI have a sort of related question that I didn't feel needed its own thread for: those of you guys who specifically use one of the Darkglass Ultra V2's (Alpha-Omega Ultra, Vintage Ultra, or B7K Ultra), do you use the cab sim mode much? Re: Recommend me a bass overdrive please.
Outside of a live situation, the main thing I use my cab sim on the VT DI is going into the pa instead of a bass amp at home. But I’ve also jacked right into the pa using other pedals, and it’s fine.
I really find it to be less of a big deal on bass. You can usually manage get a good sound with bass direct, but I think guitar usually needs that amp & speaker sound to help round things out. Direct guitar sounds can be cool, but I don’t think I’d want to do a lot of it.
Just my thoughts. I don’t think you’d really miss the cab sim or the headphone jack anyway, as long as you love the pedal.

...and to add to what I said earlier what is the best bass sound on a recording depends on the context. Sometimes you don’t know what the right bass tone is for a song until you start mixing. Plugin amp sims give you more flexibility at this stage.
I’m a strong believer in printing guitar sounds and making those decisions early, but bass is a different story.
